Chapter 16 The Impossibility of Design

Lanze does not have his own laboratory, and no laboratory can hire him.

I can’t go to the job I like, so I can only work from home.

Operating experimental equipment is "risky" for him, a mutation carrier.

In college, he had just grown up when he entered the laboratory. He had been preparing explosives since he was a child, but he had never done any experiments. Sometimes, he had to stand far away even to watch.

The country has a purely liberal attitude towards minors. In the past, he only felt comfortable before the age of twenty, and hated all the restrictions after adulthood. Looking back, he realized that it was just because minors under the age of twenty,

All included in that cruel five thousandths.

The microorganisms Lanze made were not viruses. What he made was based on prokaryotes. He borrowed the shells of prokaryotes to contain his own nucleotides, and sometimes borrowed organelles (functional components in cells). Occasionally prokaryotes

The existing organelles are not easy to use, so we can borrow some organelles from eukaryotic cells.

But things in eukaryotic cells are full of mines, and there are too many patents from various countries. Unless he checks clearly and there are no patent traps, he will not dare to use them.

The most important part of microorganisms is the nucleotide code.

In viruses, the code is in the form of RNA. In microorganisms with cell membranes, it is in DNA.

Among organisms that use DNA to encode, the structure of eukaryotic cells is very complex and large, while prokaryotic cells are much simpler. This kind of microorganism does not even have a nucleus, and the genetic information is not multiple chromosomes but a long chain of DNA rings.

Lanze's code was not written as a chain. For the convenience of his own design and the convenience of synthesis in the laboratory, the code he wrote was synthesized into a real nucleotide chain, using a chain structure similar to that of eukaryotic cells.

Eukaryotic cells are a very confusing existence in the world of genetic design.

Because this type of organisms covers all types of organisms known to humans, from yeast to cabbage, from amoeba to kittens, and of course humans. Not only single-cell microorganisms; all existing multi-cell organisms,

They are all made up of eukaryotic cells.

All organisms that humans care about, if you look closely, are almost all eukaryotes. Since humans care about them, there have been many and extensive studies in the past.

This leads to the fact that any seemingly meaningless piece of nucleotide code may have been thoroughly studied by predecessors and applied for a patent as a gene with a specific function.

The code of eukaryotic cells cannot be used casually. As a result, it is impossible to design microorganisms based on eukaryotic cells.

Lanze used prokaryotes as shells to avoid this problem. As for what he designed and how to classify it, he can only leave it to the users to consider.

Sometimes there are no suitable existing organelles in prokaryotic cells for the functions that need to be completed, and the organelles in eukaryotic cells are tied up with layers of patents and cannot be used. In this case, he has to put in some effort and redesign the organelles and generate the organelles himself.

Plan. Anyway, the code is stuffed into the prokaryotic cells, and they will assemble what they need according to the specified steps. Then they will take out the prepared organelles and stuff them into the basal mother cells that have been prepared in other parts. They will reproduce for thousands of generations.

Once the test passes, the finished product can be delivered.

This is what Lanze does.

However, he knew every step of the work of picking out cells and plugging them in, but he could only leave it to others.

The biochemical industry is a so-called "high-risk" industry recognized by society.

In fact, there is no high risk. When the microorganisms are synthesized and found to be unsightly, they are deactivated by steaming them in a pressure cooker.

The pressure cooker is a very safe method. In fact, if you use 60°C water for five minutes, if you are not worried, use 90°C water for three minutes, and all small organisms will die.

Legend has it that there are bacteria that can survive being boiled for several hours. Those small organisms either have thick pods or have a special compound structure. It is very difficult to synthesize them in the laboratory.

He had several interesting ideas in his mind, and it was possible to form a multi-cellular structure based on the structure of prokaryotes. However, he had no spare money. To play with something new, he would probably need a lot of laboratory work. Rent an experiment

It's very expensive to hire experienced people to do the work in the office.

It is more reliable to make money by selling more microorganisms.

Especially now, his appetite is several times that of before, and he has given up his lucrative part-time job as a personal trainer in the gym.

If he doesn't make money well, Sister Hehua can support him as a foodie, but can she support him for a lifetime?

Moreover, if the child does not come into the world for a day, the birth tax will still have to be paid.

As night fell, Lan Ze glanced at the large screen of the workstation in front of him. The display was stuck at the end of the simulated microbial division state. He opened the molecular structure deducer interface and added new target conditions. Then he handed over the derivation work to the algorithm.

Program and go to the kitchen to have dinner by yourself.

For dinner, he heated up beef brisket and stewed vegetarian chicken that was frozen in the refrigerator.

The beef brisket was pretty good, soft and juicy; the vegetarian chicken was so unpalatable that he stewed it himself, so it has been frozen until now.

If he wasn't worried about losing weight and white hairs continuing to spread on his body, he wouldn't want to eat that kind of food.

After finishing a large box of strange-tasting meat and soy mixture as quickly as possible, he took out the ingredients for the siomai that he had put away at noon and started to play with the siomai.

While packing, I was thinking wildly.

This shaomai bar, it was like a cell. It was filled with organelles. When I got closer and smelled it, it was quite fragrant. So Lan Ze amused himself, smiling like a child.

Even if they look like Shaomai... many strange microorganisms can be designed. At best, you can barely reach the goal by taking a few more turns and twisting directions. All living things in reality, especially humans who think they are great, are actually just

Just trying to survive.

Of course, material combinations that are simply beyond the reach of current laboratory methods cannot be created.

Lan Ze remembered that he had met a whimsical guy who planned to use microorganisms to extract nuclear waste, and asked him if he could design it. It was not a formal order, but just a gathering to eat and chat. The residual radiation of the nuclear waste itself is very harmful to living things.

It is not enough to be fatal immediately. But genetic information, that is, the macromolecular structure composed of nucleotides such as DNA and RNA, can easily be smashed to pieces by neutrons running around under radiation. In the role of biological instinct

Under the influence of radiation, the cells are working overtime to repair while the radiation is being destroyed. Under the continuous disturbance of radiation, even if the genetic material can remain intact, it is still disordered.

Microorganisms are no exception.

It is well known that nuclear radiation can be used to create biological mutations.

It is not impossible to use microorganisms to separate metal elements with different atomic weights. However, under radiation, after several generations of cell division, the genetic information will mutate into a mess. Let’s not say whether the microorganisms can survive by then, even if they are still alive.

, can the function still work normally?

Someone who knew something was present at the time and clearly told the guy that this was impossible.
