The Beiyang class began laying keels in early 1900 and secretly started construction in four dry docks at the Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai. The sea trial was conducted in June 1902 and equipped the Chinese Navy in August. This class battleship was originally planned to build six, but because China obtained two Mikasa-class battleships built by Vicos for Japan, a total of five Beiyang-class battleships were built.
