Chapter 90 Battle for the main peak

Chapter 90: Battle for the Main Peak

Chapter 90: Battle for the Main Peak

The troops sent by the Chief of Staff to reinforce us arrived soon. They were two machine gun companies of the 627th Regiment of the 209th Division, and a team of more than 200 militias. I quickly asked them to take the wounded back with the militia team. After all, their main task was to transport ammunition, and they could not play any role in this battlefield without formal training.

Both company commanders seemed to be experienced veterans. When they came to me to report, they briefly and clearly explained their troops, equipment and ammunition. Because they knew that the main task of coming up this time was to provide long-range firepower for other high grounds, they brought them all with heavy machine guns, mortars and other things.

I don't need to worry too much. I pointed out on the map which areas are still dangerous and are not suitable for building artillery positions, and which areas are commanding heights that require their firepower to deploy, they will solve other things themselves.

It should be said that their mission is very important, that is, to build a good artillery position and heavy machine gun heavy land and cooperate with our army to capture the 536th and 417th heights. But our army has already occupied a place on the main peak, so although these tasks are important, they are not difficult to complete. I believe that the company commanders of these two machine gun companies will arrange it.

The fact is exactly as I thought. Not long after, the two company commanders arranged artillery positions according to the map under the cover of the fourth company. Then, after our army used signal flares to indicate the locations of the 537th and 417th highlands, they fired rows of artillery shells and machine gun bullets in the designated direction in just over ten minutes...

I also went to see it, and I saw two machine gun companies smashing rounds of shells and rows of bullets into the thick fog at the foot of the mountain. Then I heard the sound of cannons under the fog... The bullet shells jumped like popcorn, and soon spread all over the floor. And I couldn't see whether the enemy was hit or whether the target was hit.

For me, who has come down from the battlefield of resisting U.S. aggression and aiding Korea, it feels like a waste. If we want our former leaders to see this, no matter whether we win a battle or not, we must arrest the cadres who commanded the battle and be locked up!

However, there is a reason for the machine gun company to attack like this. Isn't that? The Chief of Staff's excited voice soon came from the walkie-talkie: "The Vietnamese army on the 417 highland reverse slope was beaten to death by our army and had already fled in a panic! It's just around the corner to capture the 536 highland..."

I didn't understand the artillery matters, so I didn't bother to care about it. So I put all my thoughts on the back slope that was still under the control of the Vietnamese army.

By the way, I realized a new danger, that is, our army set up mortar positions and heavy machine gun positions on the main peak. After a long time, the Vietnamese army will soon know the location. When the Vietnamese army calculates the coordinates and shouts a cannon, then all our hard work will be in vain.

How can the enemy be allowed to snore here on the side of the bed? So you must drive the Vietnamese army from the main peak!

The Fifth Company took more than two hours to build trenches, anti-aircraft holes and traffic trenches on the inclined surface. The people from my hometown took the Sixth Company to carry the cut-off sections of wood along the traffic trenches to the trenches on the top of the mountain.

"Battery Commander!" Seeing me coming up, the people in my hometown couldn't help but complain. He said to me with some dissatisfaction: "I said why are you still like this? Other troops either dig trenches to garrison positions, or pick up reinforcements to the mountain. Look at what my company has done..."

He patted a piece of wood sitting under his butt, lowered his voice and said, "We're going to chop wood bumps, and we have to transport them up the mountain? This is exhausting and has no credit! Do you know what the soldiers under my command say?"

"What did you say?" I asked casually.

"They all said that our 6th Company is raised by our stepmother!" The hometown people replied: "They said that the battalion commander just saw that our 6th Company was bad, and we were protected objects..."

"Um!" I smiled discontently.

"You are still laughing!" The hometown man said with some anger: "I said battalion commander, how can I be the company commander if you continue like this? I might as well be a platoon leader in the fifth company..."

"Don't worry!" I interrupted the people in my hometown and laughed: "Do you know what these lumps of wood are used for?"

"I almost forgot if you didn't say it. The soldiers were talking about it all the time! Is it used for fortifications?"

I shook my head.

"What is that used for?" The hometown man said anxiously: "It's not used to smash the enemy, right!"

"You are really right!" I smiled and said, "It's just used to smash the enemy!"

"It's really... it's really used to smash the enemy?" The people from the hometown looked at me in disbelief and said, "Battery Commander, what era is this? What's not the case with our explosives packs and grenades... Is it worthy to smash the enemy with this thing?"

"The enemy's trench is at least one or two hundred meters away from us. Can grenades and explosives be thrown so far?"

"But... can this lump of wood kill people? How many people can it kill!" The people from the hometown became anxious: "We are so tired of being so angry that we transported hundreds of them, but we didn't expect..."

"The wood bumps cannot kill a few people!" I replied, "But what if I put explosives in these wood bumps!"

"That's...what?" Hearing the hometown people, they were stunned. They looked at me for a long time before they reacted: "Put the explosive pack into the lump of wood?"

I nodded, pointed to the side of the piece of wood under his butt and said, "Let the soldiers spend some more effort, dig two holes on both sides of the wood, stuff two explosives and then push them to the Japanese position..."

"Hey! You guy... are good at it!" The people in my hometown were happy and became older and younger.

After thinking about it, the hometown man patted my shoulder and said, "I'll say it first. This wood was cut by our sixth company, and we also made the things. You can't let others do this..."

"Don't worry!" I smiled and said, "The Fourth Company wants to protect the artillery position. The Fifth Company just finished a battle and then dug fortifications. Of course, the rest is yours!"

"Brother!" The people from my hometown then slapped my shoulders with the clouds dissipated. After thinking about it, he said happily: "I have to tell the news to my subordinates, but it's time for us to be proud!"

As he said that, he turned around and called a meeting of several platoon leaders who were still carrying wood. After a while, all the soldiers of the Sixth Company cheered in a low voice. Then he started to do it, grabbed the tools and started to organize the wood according to the orders of the people in his hometown.

Although the soldiers lacked tools, the two pits were just to fix the explosive pack. They just needed to dig a shallow pit and tied it with a belt. Some soldiers even saved the pit for convenience, so they dug two inverted grooves next to the trunk and tied it with a rope. As for those blasting tubes... the soldiers also had a way to tie five to six blasting tubes evenly with one trunk, so that they might not even roll faster on the inclined surface...

Not to mention that we brought some things like explosives and blasting tubes when we came up, the migrant workers who transported ammunition also brought hundreds of them, so it was enough for us to use now.

The people from my hometown were checking along the way, and shouting: "Tie them all! If one of them has not yet rolled to the position of the Japanese devils, they will be disbanded... I will tie the explosive pack to you and roll down!"

"Yes!" The soldiers were full of energy. Some of the more than 100 soldiers in a company transported explosive packs and blasting tubes, some dug wood, and some tied explosives, but it was completed in just over a dozen minutes. It was just because the trenches were too crowded, so these wooden stakes could only line up from the top of the mountain along the trenches to the foot of the mountain.

"Battery Commander! You are all ready!" The man from my hometown hugged and ran to me, asking with anticipation, "When will you do it?"

I looked at my watch and it was already past ten o'clock in the morning before I knew it. It was getting closer and closer to the arrival of Vietnamese reinforcements in Lang Son, so it was not advisable.

Thinking of it, I ordered: "Give you ten minutes to prepare for battle, and start the battle at 10:20! You must take down the enemy's backscene position. Do you have confidence?"

"Yes!" The hometown people responded without thinking, then turned around and waved their hands to the intercom and ordered: "Everyone has it, be ready for battle!"

The wood bumps were quickly pushed into the trench by the soldiers. If the enemy saw it, they would think the warriors were going to use wood as cover! But I think they would soon know the real power of these wood bumps.

On the back slope, the Vietnamese army was still hiding in the trenches and tunnels without making any sound. Occasionally, their heads quickly shrank back. Several blockbusters facing the top of the mountain were also shot without a single shot. They seemed to be waiting for our army to attack and then fired pieces of bullets to harvest the lives of our soldiers...

I know what the Vietnamese troops were thinking. They were waiting for reinforcements to arrive in Lang Son. As long as they could hold on until that moment, the situation would change soon. So they were not in a hurry to compete with us or to rush to get the position back. But what they didn't know was... they might never have this opportunity.

"Fight!" When the pointer pointed to ten:20, I shouted and ordered the battle.

Unlike usual, this time there was no sound of earth-shaking cannons, no gunshots or shouts of killing that echoed through the valley, and no soldiers rushed out of the trenches and crashed into the enemy's muzzle.

The soldiers ignited the explosive packs tied to the rolling wood, the fuse of the blasting barrel, and then pushed the rolling wood down...

With the "swoosh" sound of a lead burning, the rolling wood rolled down the inclined surface with a piece of blue smoke!

The rolling wood with explosive packs and blasting tubes rolled faster and faster on the inclined surface, and soon rolled to the trenches of the Vietnamese army.

Like all trenches, the Vietnamese trenches are also irregular in shape of "z", which can effectively reduce casualties of soldiers in the trenches. First of all, because the trenches are irregular, it is difficult for the enemy to throw a row of grenades into the trenches neatly to cause large-scale damage. Secondly, if the trenches are dug into a regular "1" shape, then only one shell or an explosive pack will explode directly in the trenches, and their shrapnel or shock waves will spread far in the semi-closed trenches. There will be no such problem in the "z" trenches. The corners can effectively block the shrapnel or shock waves on the side.

At this time, the function of rolling wood was fully reflected here. No matter whether the trenches were regular or irregular, it would fall wherever there was a pit... So when the first round went down, eight of the ten rolling wood fell directly into the trenches and lost their shadows. Two of them flew out of the trenches because they were too fast or hit a stone and flew up and stepped over the trenches...

However, these rolling woods that fly over will not be wasted. There are several trenches across the Japanese, and there are several bunkers among them.

Then I heard the Vietnamese Japanese in the trench screaming "wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-wah-

But everything was too late. I heard a loud bang of "boom..." and radiant "earth flowers" burst out from the trenches. The smoke, gravel, weapons, blood and corpses were all flying into the sky!

The "z" shaped trench can indeed reduce casualties, but its disadvantage is that it further makes the space of the trench relatively closed. In addition, our army used explosive packs containing several kilograms of "tnt" explosives, and each rolling wood carries two... So there is no need to say much about the power of this explosion. We just felt that the entire hill shook suddenly, and then the trench disappeared into the smoke of gunpowder...

In my memory, the phenomenon of trenches being bombed flat will only appear when the American cannons were crazily bombed for several hours, or the US bombers lost like eggs, and the next series of aviation bombs would appear, but we are only using a few lumps of wood and explosive packs now!

"Okay!" The soldiers couldn't help but cheer when they saw the results of the battle.

But the people from my hometown cursed at them: "What's the best? Let it go!"

"Yes!" the soldiers responded and soon pushed down another row of rolling wood.

Each trench was basically blown up and flattened, so this round of rolling wood naturally drilled into the Vietnamese defense depth without hesitation. Even the bunkers that blocked the positions of the Vietnamese army were in trouble...

Speaking of which, the bunkers were built on the back slope. The Vietnamese army, who were familiar with the tactics of the reverse slope, also knew that most of our artillery fire could not hit the back slope, so in order to save manpower and material resources, the thickness of these bunkers was naturally not as thick as the front slope.

But what they didn't expect was that this money-saving action was cheaper. The bunkers rolled down one by one, and four or five were blocked by the bunkers. If each rolled on it, there were dozens of kilograms of "tnt" explosives there. With a loud "boom", the bunker was blown out of a big hole when the smoke passed... Needless to say, the Vietnamese army hiding inside, I was afraid that they would have been hit by the cement blocks that were shot everywhere!

"Let it go!" With the roar of the people from my hometown, another batch of rolling wood was put down.

When we resisted the U.S. and aided Korea, we used this rolling wood on Shangganling to block the enemy, but we didn’t expect to use it to attack others today!

After the rolling wood was put on, the soldiers quickly transported it to another batch, but any weapon would have its defects, and the rolling thunder was no exception. Its disadvantage was that the length of the explosive packs and the fuze of the blasting barrel were fixed, and they would always explode at about the same time. So after the second trench of the Vietnamese army was blown up, the rolling thunder was powerless to the third trench near the foot of the mountain!

However, at this time, the Vietnamese army's positions were already in chaos. The thunder had already eliminated most of the bunkers and obstacles for us, as well as the mines buried in front of the trenches by the Vietnamese army...

It's time to fight for my life, and I nodded to the people in my hometown.

The people from my hometown understood and picked up the submachine gun in their hands and shouted: "Comrades! It's time to kill the enemy and make meritorious contributions, rush!"

As he said that, he jumped out of the trench and rushed towards the enemy!

"Roar!" The soldiers also shouted and followed, and they all rushed towards the enemy's only remaining line of defense like a tiger going down the mountain.

The gunshots rang out and the cannons also rang out. Although the Vietnamese defense line was only a thin one, they did not give up on defense. In addition, our army was several hundred meters away from their last line of defense, so they had enough time to organize defense. In an instant, rows of bullets and shells were fired at the soldiers.

But the soldiers were not scared away by the enemy's firepower. The soldiers in the front row fell down, and the soldiers in the back row rushed down, rushing down while holding submachine guns and shooting at the enemy...

The soldiers who were carrying out cover missions on the mountaintop positions also opened fire at the same time. The light and heavy machine guns on the commanding heights poured rain-like bullets downwards, which only made the Vietnamese troops unable to raise their heads. The battlefield suddenly became a world of blood and fire.

"The shooting team listens to my orders!" Before the battle, I arranged the shooting team to hide in various parts of the trenches. This was the time for them to play, so I immediately ordered: "Each team is looking for the targets on their own, the focus is on the Vietnamese military officers, mortars and machine gunners. Follow my orders... to fight!"

"Bang bang..." With my order, a piece of gunfire unique to sniper rifles came beside me. More than a dozen members of the shooting team opened fire at the same time. The light and heavy machine gunners and mortars that had just been exposed in the Vietnamese trenches fell down in an instant, and the battlefield immediately became a one-sided situation.

This is also the reason why I let the shooting team take action later. At the same time, I can catch the Vietnamese army off guard and give our charge troops an opportunity to advance quickly and occupy the position.

I also pulled the trigger one after another and knocked down two Vietnamese officers who had been staring at me. Just as I was aiming at a machine gunner, my eyes suddenly burst into tears and two familiar figures appeared in front of me.
