Chapter 69 Dignity
"Be careful! Don't expose the target, repeat, don't expose the target!" After thinking about the Vietnamese artillery observers hiding near us, I immediately gave this order to the soldiers.
But this order seemed too late. Before I finished speaking, more than a dozen shells rushed straight to our position with a sharp roar. Then there was a loud "boom" sound, and the mortar position that our army had just set up was trapped in a raging fire. More than a dozen gunners and several mortars were also bombed and flew everywhere.
"I'll say it again!" Looking at the scene, I couldn't help but gritted my teeth and said to the intercom: "The Vietnamese artillery observers lurked in our position, and no one is allowed to expose the target!"
"Damn it!" Xu Yongjian's curse came from the intercom: "These damn Japanese devils have set up this trap waiting for us to get into!"
"Battorney, we are surrounded!" the instructor shouted on the intercom, "Why don't we rush out! Fight against those damn Vietnamese Japanese!"
Upon hearing this, I couldn't help frowning. Although the instructor's words were very tough, they seemed to be a little panic. I was so scared and blown up by the Japanese, and it was obviously not the quality that a leader should have. And the more at this time, the more we should calm the soldiers, he became impulsive as a cadre, and even shouted "We are surrounded" at this time! I really don't know how he became this instructor.
However, there are many cadres in the army of this era who have no combat experience, so it is not surprising that there are such instructors.
"No hurry!" I replied calmly: "Now is not a good time to break through. The Vietnamese army must be prepared for our breakthrough. As long as they build fortifications on several high grounds around, and the artillery observers constantly report the situation of our army to them, they can withstand our breakthrough without any effort. Doing so will not help except increase our casualties!"
"I agree with the battalion commander!" The hometown man quickly replied: "Now there is heavy fog everywhere, with a visibility of only a few meters. We are not familiar with the terrain. If we break through, we will easily be divided and surrounded by the Vietnamese army and defeated them!"
Well! I didn't expect this!
Upon hearing this, I couldn't help but nod my head secretly. Perhaps this is exactly what the Vietnamese army hopes. The biggest weakness of the Vietnamese army is that they lack troops, and they must put their main force on the defense of Langshan.
Lang Son is not an ordinary place, it is a gateway to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. To the north of Lang Son, which is where we fight with the Vietnamese army now, is the northern Vietnamese mountainous land with undulating mountains and dense jungles. This terrain is obviously suitable for the Vietnamese army's combat, but not for the development of our army's large corps. To the south of Lang Son and from Hanoi, there are northern plains with rice fields and dense water nets. In this terrain, it is obvious that our army has an absolute advantage in artillery fire and an absolute advantage in military strength.
It is said that when Qin Shihuang went to Vietnam, he was also after he captured Lang Son, and the King of Vietnam bowed down and surrendered. Therefore, the Vietnamese army had to send heavy troops to guard Lang Son.
Some people may say, are the Vietnamese people who are full and have nothing to do, and put the capital Hanoi as close to the Chinese border to facilitate our attack?
In fact, it is not that the Vietnamese want to do this, but that they have to place the capital near the Sino-Vietnam border. Historically, the Vietnamese army needs strong protection from China, whether against Japan, France or the recent war against the United States. It can even be said that without China's help, they would not be able to support it until today. They would not be able to not get the capital close to China. Being far away from China means being close to South Vietnam controlled by the United States, and that would be a little bit cleaned by the US military...
So it’s unhappy to retribution in this cycle of natural law! In order to obtain China’s protection, the capital was approached by the Sino-Vietnam border. Now, we are turning against each other and are facing the dilemma of letting our army point directly to the capital city, which makes the Vietnamese army still have to defend everywhere if the troops are insufficient. It would be strange if this is not defeated!
Just like now, if the Vietnamese army had more troops, I believe that the Vietnamese army with rich combat experience would be able to eat our battalion. It’s a pity that they lacked enough troops. If they really fought with us, they might really kill us.
So, they used this method of fighting with less and more, first using a small amount of troops to seize our way out, and then cooperated with artillery observers to fight our army camp, hoping that this method would make us unable to calm down and break through hastily. And they could wait for the rabbit to kill our army in large quantities, in order to achieve the greatest results at the lowest cost...
Thinking of this, my heart was relieved. After knowing the strategy of the Vietnamese army, I became more confident. Although I have no way to deal with them yet, at least I know that the more the enemy wants us to be, the less we will be. That's right!
"Be careful with all units!" I ordered to the intercom again: "No one is allowed to break through, keep calm! Just treat this as a big lurking in front of the enemy, and you must not shoot until you are absolutely sure. Do you understand?"
"clear!"
"clear!"
...
"Call the correspondents up!" Then I ordered again: "Be careful, don't let the Japanese devils discover it!"
"Yes!" After a while, the correspondent climbed to me on the ground with a walkie-talkie on his back. I believe he was under a lot of psychological pressure. As a correspondent, he was discovered by a Vietnamese artillery scout. It would be fine if this piece of artillery shell would also make me, the battalion commander...
But now these do not seem to require me to consider, because at least the shells have not yet been fired!
After the correspondent connected to the regiment headquarters, he handed me the microphone. I took it and said in a low voice: "Report to the regiment commander, my battalion was surrounded by the Vietnamese army, and the enemy's troops were unknown. Please reinforce, request reinforcements!"
What I said is actually half true and half false, and it can be said that it is all true, but I have already determined that the enemy's troops are not large. Then I asked for reinforcements... In fact, I wanted to know how the war between the First Battalion and the Third Battalion was going on! The situation is actually very obvious. If the First Battalion and the Third Battalion also broke through the defense line of the Vietnamese army, then we seem to just need to wait for them in place. Several battalions of our army surrounded us, and it would be strange if the Vietnamese army did not roll up the bedding and escaped.
But Captain Zhang's answer disappointed me: "What happened? Why was it surrounded by the Vietnamese army? The first and third battalions have not yet broken through the enemy's defense line. Where can I have any soldiers to reinforce you? Find a way to break through!"
Upon hearing this, I couldn't help but smile bitterly, but fortunately I didn't put my hope on him. So I asked again: "Captain! When will the troops of the First Battalion and the Third Battalion arrive?"
"The situation is not clear!" The voice of Captain Zhang on the other end of the microphone was filled with frustration: "It seems that another batch of reinforcements came from the Vietnamese army, and even the high ground you just captured was counterattacked by the Vietnamese army. It is probably impossible for you to want reinforcements!"
"Where are you?" The voice of Political Commissar Huang came from the microphone: "We can provide you with artillery fire assistance!"
"We don't know where we are!" I smiled bitterly again: "There are great errors between the map and the field, and the fog is heavy and the visibility is low, so the guide cannot tell the location!"
There was a silence on the other side of the microphone, and it was obvious that they were powerless.
After a long time, Political Commissar Huang encouraged me and said, "Captain Cui, you are a good comrade! We believe that you will definitely be able to get out of the encirclement of the Vietnamese army. You don't have to advance towards Komashan as the original plan, and then return to meet us according to the original route after breaking through the encirclement!"
"Yes!" Although I responded so, I didn't think so in my heart.
The Vietnamese army is not fools, and they will naturally think about what we will think about. They will not let us go back and kill them. And it seems easy for them to do this. Just lay dozens of mines and set up a few machine guns on the way back...
There is no hope for reinforcements, and long-range artillery aid is not known where to go, so the rest seems to be up to us!
"Boom..." At this time, with a few roars, several shells exploded on our position. The figures of several soldiers were thrown into the air in the fire, and then fell heavily.
Before the bombing of the shells faded, screams followed one after another. Looking along with the screams, a soldier with his right hand was blown off and shouted loudly, holding the blood-flowing wound like a pillar. The shrill shout echoed in this empty and quiet valley, which only made the soldier's heart hurt.
"No rescue is allowed! No fight back!" I ordered with gritted teeth.
"battalion commander!"
"battalion commander!"
...
The order I gave immediately came to opposition from the soldiers.
But I ordered again without thinking: "Shut up all of them! Execute the command!"
Listening to my unquestionable tone, the soldiers did not refute anymore, only cursed on the other end of the walkie-talkie.
The soldiers also knew that my order was correct, which was actually the same as the sniper's corpse-sieging attacks and aids, and it was even more ruthless and more poisonous.
Because as long as a soldier stands up to rescue, the positions of other soldiers may be exposed. Then, after the Vietnamese army's artillery bombardment, there will be more wounded people, and then more soldiers will expose themselves to jump out of the hidden place to rescue... In this way, it will take not long for our entire army to mess up under the artillery fire of the Vietnamese army. The artillery observers of the Vietnamese army seemed to just need to hide quietly and then guide the shells to explode at us one by one.
So we could only helplessly watch the wounded screaming and roaring in our sight... Suddenly, under the unexpected eyes of the soldiers, the injured soldier forced himself to sit up with his only remaining hand, his chest was drifting sharply and taking a few deep breaths, then raised his head and shouted to the sky at the top of his lungs: "Battery Commander, avenge me!"
At the same time, he suddenly ignited the grenade that was blocking his waist. With a burst of blue smoke, a loud "boom" sound was heard. The wounded was driven by the shock wave of the grenade and rolled a few times, and then there was no sound again.
The entire battlefield was silent, with no sound, only the dead bodies and craters on the ground proved that everything that had happened here was alive.
The artillery observers of the Vietnamese army seemed to be shocked by the death of the soldier, so that after a long time, no shells exploded again. The soldier told them in another way and also told us that the blood of the Chinese people could flow and their heads could be broken, but dignity should not be insulted!
The intercom came the creaking sound of soldiers gritting their teeth, and the correspondent beside them even secretly wiped their tears, and my ears kept echoing the words that the soldier shouted before his death, "Battery Commander, avenge me, avenge me..."
What kind of trust is this!
I thought he would hate me, hate me for not having someone to save him, hate me for leaving him alone, hate me for not caring about his life and death... But he did not, he did not hate me, but gave me all his last hope...
If he really hated me, maybe I would be better. But now, I just feel that the guilt in my heart is flooding like the sea water, one wave after another, one wave after another, and one wave after another, forcing me to jump out of the hidden point and find the Japanese devils to fight to the death!
But I finally endured it because I knew that if I did that, I would not only not help him revenge, but also kill myself and more comrades in the army...
I raised the telescope with tears in my eyes and searched carefully in the jungle around me, but I could say that I had nothing but found a few soldiers. I soon realized that there was no way to find the Vietnamese observers in this jungle, because there were hundreds of our soldiers hidden in this jungle, and the Vietnamese artillery observers were mixed in it, so even if I found them, I could not accurately distinguish them.
So what should I do now?
It is definitely not possible to break through. Now that individual weapons are highly developed, it is difficult for a company to attack and defend the positions of one squad, not to mention that our army is not familiar with the terrain and is very likely to allow the Vietnamese army to be divided.
So stay like this?
Originally, this did work. The Vietnamese army was just trying to force us to mess up and break through. Their artillery observers wanted to find that the positions of our soldiers were extremely limited when they had such low visibility. So we just had to lurk like this, waiting for the first or third battalions to break through the defense line and then they would be defeated.
But since the soldiers died in front of me, I have given up this negative thought, and it is not my style. On the battlefield, I have always been too tit for tooth and eye for eye. Every drop of blood that the enemy makes us shed and every life that we take will be returned ten times!
By the way! The visibility is poor, why didn’t I expect this!
I raised my telescope and looked into the distance. In this smoky valley, I could only see fifty meters away.
I believe that my eyesight will not be worse than that of the Vietnamese artillery observers. The Vietnamese artillery observers will only guide the mortar bombing when they discover the target... In other words, the artillery observers are only fifty meters away from the target...
Thinking of this, my heart was lit up and I quickly observed several explosion sites bombed by the Vietnamese mortars with a telescope... There were seven different places in total, some of which were close and some far away, which showed that the Vietnamese observers were not only lurking in one place, but multiple places.
This is also reasonable. Of course, the Vietnamese army would not expect that there would be blind spots for their observation here, so there should be one or two observers arranged for each high ground.
Then I divided the seven different explosion points into three piles according to the distance, and then drew circles with the explosion points as the center and fifty meters as the radius. The intersection of several circles... is undoubtedly the suspicious hiding place for the observers of the Vietnamese artillery.
This round or not is not tight, and I was startled. One of the suspicious places was the rock I was hiding! But then I thought about it, it was right! My location is not far from the village, not far from the soldiers who committed suicide by pulling grenades. If the observer hides here, he can indeed see these targets...
But they couldn't see me, otherwise I would have died long ago!
So I quickly determined that the Vietnamese army was hiding in front of the rock, and because I went around to hide behind, I happened to avoid their sight.
Thinking of this, I pulled out the military sting at my waist and touched the rock without saying a word. Originally, I thought the Vietnamese army was hiding in some hole or cracks under the rock, but after lying on the ground, I didn't find any caves or cracks. The communications soldier looked at me with a cautious look, and he held the ak47 in his hand tightly at one side of the rock and did not dare to come out. But when he saw me coming back around the rock, his eyes were full of doubts.
In fact, it is not just him who is confused. I can't figure it out even though I know that the Japanese devils are here, but I can't find them. Could it be that he still gets into the stone?
Drill into the stone!
I suddenly realized that the Vietnamese army was not hiding under the stone, but hiding in the middle of the stone... I remember when I ran back, I saw a flat and narrow crack in the middle of the rock. The crack must be the observation hole of the Vietnamese army!
I quickly found the entrance of the Vietnamese army. It was a cave connected to the crack on the side of the rock, but it had been carefully blocked by the Vietnamese army with gravel of different sizes.
Do you move these gravels away? Obviously not. Once the Vietnamese observers noticed any movement, they would just call the artillery fire and smash a few shells into their own position and they would get rid of me!
At the same time, I don’t want to alarm other observers of the Vietnamese army. Otherwise, if they are prepared to take risks and change positions, it will be troublesome to find them out.
Put the grenade into the crack?
It seems that it can't work. The crack is from top to bottom. Not only will the grenade roll out, but it will also alarm other Vietnamese troops.
Chapter completed!
