Chapter 132 Ambush

Because we were worried about exposing the strategic intention of our main force to move eastward, we received an order from the division headquarters that we were not allowed to take a step out of the tunnel during the day. This seemed nothing to us veterans, but it was different for those new recruits. They always walked around the tunnel here and there, and from time to time they sighed a few boredom, which made me shake my head.

It was finally evening that the volunteers all packed their luggage and set off. They always thought they could go to find the large army now, but at this moment, a correspondent came and asked the battalion-level cadres to attend a meeting.

After walking out of the tunnel, I gathered with Battalion Commander Xu and Instructor Lin, and followed the correspondent along the trenches built by the People's Army. The comrades of the People's Army were quite kind. Along the way, many people greeted us warmly. Some even asked us in proficient Chinese which unit we were from. There was always a sense of indescribable nostalgia in their eyes when they looked at us. I was thinking in my heart that this part of whom speaks Chinese should have fought in the People's Liberation Army. Now that we see, we must be thinking about the troops!

Following the correspondent into a spacious air-raid shelter, there were more than a dozen people gathered in the hole, including the People's Army and the Volunteer Army, Commander Chu, Political Commissar Chen Ye and the People's Army Commander Jin Chuanchang were talking about something around the map.

Before the meeting started, I looked at the place where the People's Army was supposed to be. After a moment, I couldn't help but feel a little unbalanced. They were all tunnels, which were much better than what we lived in. The logs were arranged flat around the tunnel wall, so spacious that they could accommodate dozens of people. A military map was flatly nailed into the wall, with office desks, backrest chairs, kettles, tea cups and other daily necessities. What surprised me even more was that a small door was opened on the tunnel wall on the right. With the dim light, you could see a small bed inside, which seemed to be a single bedroom.

Seeing this, I couldn't help but smile bitterly, "Where is this tunnel? Compared with the place where we live, it can be called a presidential suite. I have long known that the People's Army is not as equal to the Volunteer Army, but the treatment is not so different!" No wonder those soldiers who transferred from the People's Liberation Army to the People's Army are unwilling. In the Volunteer Army, everyone suffers together, and no one says anything, but in the People's Army...

"Comrades!" Seeing that everyone was here, Chu Tuan raised his head from the map and said, "We just received the order. Our army will launch a full-line attack on the puppet army at about 8 o'clock tonight, which is in two hours!"

"Okay!" When the soldiers heard that there was a war, they all pulled their fists excitedly.

"There is not much time left, let's talk short!" Commander Chu raised his hand to signal the comrades to calm down: "As the war is about to begin, our army is no longer in a hurry to move closer to the main force. The superiors decided to let us cooperate with the comrades of the 47th Regiment of the 13th Division of the 3rd Corps of the People's Army to fight together. This is Colonel Jin Chuanchang, the commander of the 47th Regiment of the People's Army."

A few sparse applauses sounded in the conference room, most of whom were clapping their hands. Last night, the Volunteer Army soldiers heard that the regiment commander did not take our Volunteer Army seriously, and they would inevitably have some opinions about him. Several Volunteer Army soldiers applauded out of politeness.

"Comrades!" The Colonel Jinchuan Chang began to speak again: "It has been a while since our Sino-Korean Joint Command was established, but this may be the first time this time. I hope that under the wise leadership of the great leader General Kim Il-sung, the two armies can work sincerely and bravely kill the enemy, and show the majesty and momentum of our two armies in a mixed battle, and report to our leader General Kim Il-sung with the most brilliant results!"

"Long live General Kim Il-sung!"

...

The cadres of the People's Army all raised their fists and shouted. Although the soldiers did not understand Korean, they were familiar with Kim Il-sung's name. Now they could guess what they were shouting at. So everyone had a little unnatural look on their faces, because the soldiers usually shouted Long live Chairman Mao, but now they heard another voice...

"Long live the Communist Party of China! Long live Chairman Mao!" I don't know who took the lead and shouted first. The soldiers were excited as soon as they heard it, so they shouted as if they were intentionally competing with the People's Army. The shouting instantly covered the People's Army, which made Captain Chu and Political Commissar Chen Ye a little amused and cry.

"Comrades!" At this time, Political Commissar Chen Ye stood up and pointed to the map and said, "There is not much time left. Let me first introduce the enemy situation: the enemy in front of our army is the first and third corps of the puppet army, with a total force of more than 100,000 people. The line along the Zhaoyang River is the sixth division, the first division, the fifth division, the third division, the seventh division, and the eleventh division. The main task of our army is to cooperate with the People's Army to cross the Zhaoyang River, seize Houpingli, Meishanli, enter the Wangsheng Valley area, insert the junction between the sixth division and the seventh division, cut off the connection between the sixth division and the seventh division, and prevent the sixth division from fleeing south!"

"Comrades, please be careful!" Political Commissar Chen Ye paused and continued: "Our army's strategic intention is to concentrate superior forces to annihilate two to three divisions of the puppet army. Therefore, the most important thing in this battle is to insert fast and deep. If you encounter some defensive positions of the US military, fight if you can, and go around if you can't. Don't fight indulge in fighting!"

"Yes!" the soldiers responded.

"I heard last night..." At this time, Captain Chu turned his eyes in the direction of me: "Some of our comrades are willing to compete with the comrades of the People's Army!"

The soldiers turned all their eyes to me, and occasionally made a few giggles, which made me embarrassed by the grasping of my head.

"It's a good thing to compete with the comrades of the People's Army to kill the enemy!" Captain Chu smiled secretly: "It's great to compare who kills the enemy bravely and who fights more reactionaries! But you must remember that you must not hurt the harmony between brothers. In this competition, our volunteer army has never been afraid of anyone, nor has he been a coward. Comrades, do you think so?"

"Yes!" the soldiers roared and responded. The soldiers could not understand what Captain Chu said, so they all wanted to do something big.

After the meeting, they returned to the tunnel to explain the mission to the soldiers. The soldiers knew that they could not go back to find the troops, and they were still depressed, but when they heard that Captain Chu was willing to compete with the People's Army, they were all attracted by the interest and wanted to go to the battlefield immediately.

The Zhaoyang River is a north-south river with a width of 100-200 meters and a water depth of 1 meter. It can be traversed, just to the left of the two legions of South Korea.

Obviously, the puppet army also realized the shortcomings of their left wing, so they laid land mines, barbed wire, built bunkers, cannons and other defensive fortifications along the river, trying to make up for this defect with the Zhaoyang River natural danger.

It should be said that these arrangements are still very correct. I lay fully armed in the mud on the west bank of Zhaoyang River. With a little starlight, I looked at the layers of barbed wire and bunkers across the river through the sight. I couldn't help but feel a different look at the command of the puppet army.

Although it is already May, the river water is still cold, and it is not easy to just walk in the river water, not to mention that there are many barbed wire, mines and bunkers across the river. If the puppet army is really a unit that dares to fight, it is not difficult to rely on such fortifications to defend the Volunteer Army's attack. It's a pity that they are not...

The so-called fortifications are dead, people live, and the most important thing in war is human, not fortifications. Even if there are such natural dangers, the volunteer army only fired a few shots and shouted a few times to kill the puppet army and started to escape. So what's the use of even the most solid fortifications?

It is said that when the US military received the news that the volunteers broke through the puppet army's defense line, they did not believe that this was true. Because they could not believe that the straight line distance on the map was 18 kilometers and the actual distance on the ground was 29 kilometers. How could the Chinese people break through such a long distance overnight without the familiarity of the terrain at night? This is almost the distance that the Chinese army marched overnight.

If this is true, there are only two reasonable explanations: one is that the Third Legion of South Korea did not resist at all, and the Chinese made way out as soon as the Chinese attacked them, allowing the Chinese to step through their blocking positions; the other is that Chinese soldiers have wings and have the ability to fly.

So after this battle, the US military believed that such an incompetent army had no value at all, and the Third Corps of South Korea was disbanded. A local army was defeated in the local war and was ordered to disband by foreign troops that "assisted their battles". In any case, this is the most strange thing in the history of world wars.

At this time, a string of red signal flares suddenly rose in the sky, and the Volunteer Army's attack began.

In an instant, the sound of cannons roared behind us, and one after another of the cannon shells exploded on the other side of the river. The flashes of fire destroyed the barbed wire and bunkers on the other side of the river, and detonated landmines.

However, the artillery fire of the Shihara Army will always be limited by the fragile supply line. In just over a dozen minutes, the artillery fire began to extend, and several red signal flares rose again in the sky.

"Kill!" Then the sound of the shaking shouts of killing sounds came. The soldiers stood up from the ambush and rushed towards the Zhaoyang River with their guns. In an instant, the hillside, the fields, and the road... were full of soldiers. In the darkness, they could not tell which volunteers and which people were the people. They just felt that the crowds were surging forward like a tide.

Then there was a sound of thumping and the soldiers rushed into the cold river like penguins jumping into the sea.

I swear, if I were the only one, I wouldn't have been so stupid that I jumped into the river in this weather where the ice and snow had not yet completely melted, and then let the river water soak my cotton coat and pants, and then it swelled like a fermented steamed bun.

But seeing so many people jumped into the river without hesitation, I felt embarrassed to be the particularly timid one. I believe many of them had the same idea as me.

The biting coldness kept coming from my lower body. I could feel the flowing river water snatching the temperature from my body bit by bit. After a while, I could hardly feel the existence of my feet.

People often have a phenomenon of following the trend in their behavior. When courage becomes a normal state, a considerable number of people who were not brave in the past will also become brave, just like we are now.

"Dadada..." The gunshots sounded across the river, and several volunteer soldiers fell down, and the blood soon dyed the river water around him red, but the soldiers seemed to have become accustomed to this and still walked forward with firm steps.

Experienced volunteer soldiers couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief when they heard this sporadic gunfire, because if the enemy had an organized defense, the gunfire should be a single shot, and before that, they should have fired flares first, but now there is not even a sound of cannons, which is enough to prove that the enemy's resistance is not strong, or that the enemy has begun to escape.

Sure enough, when we rushed to the other side more than ten minutes later, we found that there were only a few puppet troops on the other side who were not afraid of death or that they had not found that the others had fled were shooting machine guns in the bunker. As a result, the soldiers easily dropped a few grenades to solve the problem.

The pseudo-Sixth Division... I remember that during the first battle, our regiment was killed and injured in Jiulongjiang. Now, I am so coincidental that I encounter this old opponent here again.

Speaking of this puppet Sixth Division, it is really a strange force. It was originally the worst-known bad division among the puppet army. Because before the war started, several battalions of troops ran to the north to surrender Kim Il-sung. But this bad division played a vital role in the first shot in the Korean War, because they were the only prepared army, and their resistance bought valuable time for the retreat of other troops.

The army turned over because of this, but it still acted so incompetent under the guns of the volunteers.

The smoke of gunpowder was still everywhere, the barbed wire, the trenches were messy, and there were shell craters everywhere. Several enemy corpses were right beside the road. It can be imagined that just ten minutes of shelling just now, they had completely defeated them.

"Run and move forward!" The order came from the front. I didn't rush to find a dress of dry cotton coat, so I had to run forward with the troops. The troops quickly embarked on the mountain road, which was a route that had been formulated before the war began. If we wanted to encircle the enemy as much as possible, we had to march on our two legs, so we had to walk on the mountain road.

What surprised me was that this mountain road felt familiar. I thought it was a long time to walk through this mountain road when I retreated after the Hengcheng counterattack last time! I still remember that there was a small village next to this mountain road. There were dozens of wooden houses scattered along the road, and a small river was passing by the mountain. The mountains were lush and tranquil and pleasant.

However, this time when I passed by this small village that we once loved, there was nothing left, and only a piece of broken walls and scorched earth was left in front of me.

The puppet army looted this beautiful village. At the foot of a dirt mountain not far from the village, we saw an old woman sitting in a newly dug cave, and the old man's moans came from the cave. The old man lying on the straw mat had his right arm blown off. I could not suppress the resentment in my chest, nor could I comfort the two old men who suffered. I could only silently pour half a bag of fried noodles in the dry food bag into the old woman's pottery bowl. The old woman's indifferent and painful expression made me feel chilled.

This reminds me of a movie made in South Korea that I watched in modern times. One plot in it is that when the Korean People's Army came, a woman attended a meeting organized by the People's Army just for a bag of rice. The puppet army wanted to shoot her as a red person. I think this village has encountered a similar thing!

After following the comrades of the People's Army in the muddy mountain road for seven or eight hours, they finally arrived at the destination - Meishanli before dawn. By the way, the People's Army is worthy of being a guerrilla force, and its ability to climb mountains and ridges is not inferior to that of the Volunteers. But what I can't understand is why the officials of the People's Army wear boots. As soon as they arrive at the destination, the People's Army wear boots becomes a beautiful scenery.

They sat on the stone one by one, chanting "Oh, Ouch..." with an expression, grinning, and slowly pulled their boots down in pain. When they pulled them down, they screamed terrible! All the white socks were dyed red, and even the leader was no exception.

"Look at you're so majestic!" Zhao Yongxin smiled secretly while digging the trench: "What's the name of those long shoes?"

"Boots!" Instructor Zhao responded.

"Well, boots!" Zhao Yongxin nodded seriously and said, "It would be great if our country had this thing called boots in ancient times!"

"Why?" As soon as he heard this, Instructor Zhao couldn't help but wonder: "What does this have to do with ancient times? Isn't it similar to shoes?"

"In ancient times, there was this thing, so women didn't need to wrap their feet, so it was so troublesome, right?" Zhao Yongxin smiled and said, "As long as women wear this thing, they can't run fast no matter how hard they run!"

The soldiers laughed, but before the soldiers laughed, a strange roar suddenly sounded in the sky. The soldiers were all people who came to war. When they heard this sound, they knew it was an enemy's shelling. They hurriedly threw away their shovels and lay down on the spot.

As soon as I lay down into a small ditche, I heard a roar beside me. With the sound of vibration coming from under me, the soil rushed towards me like waves.

Then before we could react from the sound of cannons, gunfire sounded around me. I poked my head out of the ditch with bullets and looked around. I saw that heads appeared on the surrounding high ground at some point, and were catching fire with light and heavy weapons at the position we had not yet built.
