Chapter 120 Artillery Battalion

The fifth battle.

Green leaves and mud, spring is always a prosperous scene in the world, but I really don’t like the spring in North Korea. Although you can see some long-lost greens in this spring, the slowly melting snow on the trees on the ground turns the whole world into a wet area, just like a heavy rain has just happened.

The soldiers were hiding in a forest a few kilometers away from Chizhongli. On the top of this mountain, we could monitor a highway to the government and the open land where artillery shells had been buried. Once the US artillery really set up positions there, that was when we were in play.

In fact, I chose this place as a hidden place and had a little selfishness, because I knew that once the battle started, the Forty Army would carry out interspersed missions from here at a speed of eight kilometers per hour. At that time, I might be able to return to my own troops.

Although most of the fifth battles were fought by troops that had just entered North Korea, and after four consecutive battles, the first batch of troops who entered North Korea were exhausted and went to the rear to rest, there were still a few troops with little casualties continuing to participate in the war, for example, the Forty Army where I was located was one.

I haven't seen Hu Zi, Zhao Yongxin and the others for a long time, and I don't know how they are.

It's strange that when I was in the army, I wanted to be free and no one cared about it. But now I really have to pull up a unit outside to be the king of the mountain, but I feel like I'm missing something in my heart and I'm not calm about anything.

For example, in the past few days, I seem to have to take my troops to hide in the tunnel. I rarely pull the troops out at night, and even if I pull them out, I can't do anything. The enemies outside are either from a regiment or a division. When they fight, they are not going to touch the stone with eggs!

Just an armored artillery battalion! I dare not expect our company to play a great role in the battlefield. After all, on a battlefield where hundreds of thousands of people are dispatched, the team of more than 100 people in my hand is as weak as an ant. I was thinking in my mind that the Volunteer Army and the People's Army invested in the fifth battle have even one million. It is a veritable army of millions, and our army only accounts for one ten thousand of them. So if we can destroy an American armored battalion, it will be enough in proportion!

What we have to do seems not difficult, just wait for the American artillery battalion to set up positions on the open ground, and then lead a little, hehe...

I sat up from the logs in the tunnel bored. The melted snow water made the dirt in the tunnel muddy and could not hide at all, so the soldiers had to lay a layer of logs at the bottom of the tunnel. Although the project volume increased, it was much better than the previous tunnels. Of course, if the soldiers had not stepped on the "floor" and were covered with mud when they entered and exited, they would have been clean and comfortable.

I walked out of the tunnel along the uneven "floor", and the snow on the trees outside dripped down like rain. If it weren't for the cold air around me and the snow on the ground that had not completely melted on the trees, I would have regarded this place as a hot rainforest.

I picked up a bamboo hat placed outside the tunnel and put it on my head, and walked towards a tree at the entrance of the tunnel. There were dozens of bamboo tubes scattered below, drop by drop, and then dripping water from the tree. I chose a bamboo tube without insects and leaves, and then drank the ice water inside.

Bamboo hats, bamboo tubes, and even straw raincoats are all things that soldiers have tossed out in their spare time. When it comes to the survival ability of volunteer soldiers in their wilds, there is no way to say. You can use some bamboo, leaves, and the "hair" of plants to be "describable". Even without a pot, it will not hurt them. They opened a small hole in the bamboo joint, poured rice and water into the small hole, and then put the bamboo joints on the fire to bake. After a while, they cut the bamboo joints open, and it turned out to be a fragrant bamboo rice, which was so fragrant! It was much more authentic than the bamboo rice I bought in restaurants now.

This kind of survival ability is inseparable from the hard living environment that the soldiers have lived since childhood. I remember a scholar in modern times once said: "The more primitive the country, the more unbeatable it is!" This has a certain truth, which means that for a modern country, the factory will be paralyzed as soon as the power station is blown up, and the people who are used to modern electrical appliances cannot live, and it seems that there is no impact on the primitive country. But what he did not consider is, does the primitive country have the power to compete with others?

"Boom..." A series of cannon sounds came from a distance, shaking the water droplets on the trees, and the snow fell down like raindrops, making me feel embarrassed when I was standing under the tree. Chen Liang snatched it out of the tunnel and put on a straw raincoat for me. Although it was a bit weird to wear a straw raincoat on this sunny day, it seemed really necessary.

"Company Commander!" Chen Liang also looked in the direction where the sound of cannons came, and said intentionally or unintentionally: "It's still shooting there, and it seems that the sound of cannons has been much less. I don't know what the situation is!"

"Yeah!" I nodded and responded casually, but I knew in my heart that it was the US military competing with the volunteers for the famous "Kansas Line".

The so-called "Kansas Line" starts from the mouth of Linjin River, passes through Panmunjom, crosses the 38th Line diagonally, from the north of Lianchuan to the Huachuan Reservoir. This is basically a battlefield line about 20 kilometers north of the 38th Line and is basically parallel to the 38th Line.

The "Kansas Line" is 184 kilometers wide, and its left wing can rely on the sea. The Huachuan Reservoir is 16 kilometers wide, which is also a military defense support, so it can jointly form a triangle area that threatens the command and supply of the Chinese army.

This line is the shortest and proved to be the easiest line to defend. If the US military can establish a foothold on this line and build fortifications, then their advanced weapons and equipment can easily block the attack of millions of volunteers. Without a navy, the Air Force's Volunteers will be blocked north of this line and there is no possibility of development. However, the US military can use the navy at any time. The advantages of the Air Force will be landed on the back of our army, and the Volunteers will face the danger of being driven out of North Korea again.

In fact, about 50,000 regular divisions of the four National Guard Divisions of the US military (18,000 people per division according to the National Guard Division) have been transferred to Japan. In addition, 36,000 puppet army divisions are undergoing training in Japan, with a total of more than 150,000 people, ready to carry out landing operations on our army at any time.

It was precisely because the boss felt these dangers that he rushed to launch the fifth battle without being prepared and the domestic troops had not yet reached the scheduled combat location. Some people regarded the fifth battle as one of the few miscalculations in the president's decades of military career, but in fact it was not exactly the case.

"Company Commander..." Ren Fengyou also ran out with a bamboo hat on his back. He looked at the smoke from the distance. He couldn't help but worry as he heard the sound of gunfire and gunfires: "Company Commander, this battle will not be impossible! Then we are going to fight guerrilla attacks here for the rest of our lives?"

Chen Liang couldn't help but exclaim: "Who said he wanted to fight the reactionaries a few days ago? What's wrong? I can't hold it up after just a few days?"

"Who, who, who... can't squat anymore!" Ren Feng replied dissatisfiedly: "I just miss the big army. We have watched the reactionaries walking around the road all day long but dare not fight. They are almost moldy when squatting in the wet and black tunnel, and the soldiers are also confused!"

"Company Commander..." Chen Liang thought about it, and couldn't help but suggest, "Why don't we go and destroy the enemy? Blast the road and destroy the iron and run away. If you have a good life, you may even encounter the arsenal and let us blow up his mother..."

"What day is today?" I asked back without answering.

"This..." Chen Liang hesitated for a while, and then quickly replied: "No. 21!"

"Well, then let's go tomorrow night!" I nodded thoughtfully, and then ordered: "Let the soldiers be prepared and act tomorrow night!"

"Yes!" Chen Liang and Ren Fengyou couldn't help but salute happily when they heard this, and then ran around excitedly and told the soldiers in various tunnels the good news. After a while, a burst of cheers came from the tunnel.

I couldn't help but shook my head with a wry smile. They have always been used to fighting sports wars. They have been running outside all day since they started fighting. They have never tried to squat in the tunnel like now, without fighting or running. What's more, they have been holding back for seven or eight days, but they have been so excited that they can do a mission tomorrow night.

However, the task they thought was a bit different from what I thought. The fifth battle was a battle between the two sides. The casualties were the worst! After this battle, both sides had a new understanding of the other party's combat effectiveness, and no large-scale battles occurred since then.

The next dusk, as soon as the sky was dark, I set off with the soldiers who were covered in disguise. The destination was not far away, and it arrived more than half an hour later. The soldiers were surprised to find that the destination was the open land where we buried the bomb last time. Although the soldiers all had questions in their hearts, I explained to them before departure that this mission was to lurk, ambush, and the soldiers were not allowed to speak or move and expose the target. So the soldiers did not ask much. Under my command, they divided into three groups to lurk on the back slope of the three hills next to the open land, and found the leads hidden in the soil a few days ago.

As usual, I was in a row with Ren Feng, lurking on the high ground facing the open land, and ranked first in the line. Ren Feng was lying next to me, and only if there were cadres and soldiers who took the lead in the fighters!

Lurking is not a pleasant thing. The melted snow water on the ground will slowly seep into my cotton coat, making me feel a little cold and a wet discomfort. The only benefit is that I can vaguely see the road at the other end of the open land. I gently took the rifle up and wanted to observe the terrain of the road through the scope, but due to the slope, it was impossible to do so. This gave me the desire to climb a higher level for a while. But I thought that before the action, I had given the death order, and once lurking, no warriors were allowed to move, so I quickly gave up this plan.

When it comes to lurking battles, many people will think of Qiu Shaoyun, a fighting hero who lets the flames burn to death in order not to expose his targets. But that was 51 years, and it was more than a year before. So far, the volunteers have dug trenches and ambushed many times on the enemy's must-pass road, but it is probably the first time to lurk in, especially like me now, the enemy lurks on their positions without knowing what they have been.

So the soldiers seemed a little uncomfortable, and there were a few sighs and whispers from time to time in the darkness, which made me realize that the soldiers were a little uncontrollable. They must be wondering in their hearts that there was not even a figure around them. What is the purpose of lying motionless?

While he was secretly worried, three red signal flares suddenly rose in the sky in the distance, followed by lights passing through the dark night sky. In an instant, the unique "huoqiusha" sound of Katyusha rocket was launched resounded throughout the Korean Peninsula. After a while, with a roar, orange-red flames rose from the distance. From a distance, it looked like a long line of fire spanning from west to east on the Korean Peninsula.

The fifth battle finally started.

This scene was not only seen by the US military guarding the defense line, but also by the volunteer soldiers lying beside me. If it weren't for the order, they would have stood up and pointed at each other in surprise.

The troops that had just entered North Korea were equipped with Soviet weapons. These "Katyusha" rockets must have been made by three newly formed rocket launchers of the Volunteer Army. During World War II, the US military had never tasted the taste of such rockets that shocked the enemy's guts, and unexpectedly, they finally knew how powerful it was on this Korean battlefield.

Half an hour later, the sound of artillery finally came down. Although there was no sound, the soldiers could imagine that hundreds of thousands of volunteers launched a raft of impact on the enemy's long front before the sound of artillery was stopped. I thought that scene must be very spectacular, but at the same time, I was a little glad that I was not on that battlefield because I knew that they were going to hike through the semi-melt Linjin River in the rain of bullets...

This reminded me of the cold that night on the 175th Highlands, and my legs that almost got frozen. I couldn't help but shivered when I thought of this!

Time passed by minute by minute. Although the front line was hot, the place where we lurked was silent, and sometimes we could even hear a few insect calls.

Anyway, there was nothing to do, so I just thought about it. MacArthur must have been dismissed more than ten days ago! Of course, the one who took his position was Li Qiwei, who made great achievements on the Korean battlefield, and the one who replaced Li Qiwei's Eighth Army was Van Vritte, who he chose.

Some people in the US military said that Van Vreet was a "hero in troubled times". He was a general who grew up from a soldier. His military career was not very lucky. He was still a regiment commander at the end of World War II, but he had good luck when he landed in Normandy. It is said that the battle of the division he was in was very difficult at that time. Five days later, the entire division was still on the coast without progress. The German counterattack caused huge casualties in the entire division. Seeing that this local landing was about to fail, Eisenhower and Bradley, who were inspecting the front line, decided to withdraw the current commander of the 29th Division and let the representative commander Van Vreet act as commander. So, "the entire division was like awakening and advancing."

So soon he became a formal division commander and then promoted to army commander.

What made the volunteers even more familiar and hated was the nickname of Van Variett ammunition. Van Variett excellently inherited Li Qiwei's "Fire Sea Tactics" and promoted it. For places where the Chinese army might appear, he always blew it into scorched earth regardless of ammunition, so that after the war statistics showed that the amount of ammunition he used was more than five times the allowable limit for US military operations.

Just like this armored artillery battalion I will deal with, they will pour out all the bombs to the volunteers under the command of Van Vritte and leave.

But could it be that I guessed the wrong place? An hour later, my confidence was shaken a little. The battle had reached the point where the armored artillery battalion had not appeared yet. Is there any wrong information I saw in modern times?

Just as I was getting up and down, a roar of motors suddenly came from the south, which made me feel happy. They must have come.

Sure enough, in a while, there were lights on the road. Among the lights, five Sherman tanks were led by a mixed convoy, including m7 self-propelled artillery and large-caliber howitzers towed by cars. One by one, one after another, was rushing northward, and I thought it was rushing to reinforce the armored artillery battalion on the front line.

But to my disappointment, they did not mean to stop when they passed before us. They might not have noticed the open land in front of us, let alone the garrison.

I couldn't help but sigh and lowered my head in disappointment. It's better for man to calculate than God to calculate. It's still a waste of time to lose so much effort. The soldiers lie here and freeze for several hours. Now I don't know how to explain to them.

But at this moment, I found that the convoy had stopped. I couldn't care about so much. I raised my body and raised my rifle and looked forward through the scope. Under the light, I saw another artillery unit withdrawing from the front. It was probably the puppet army, and the two troops stood together. It seemed that the US military was shouting and ordering the puppet army to go back to fight, but the puppet army asked the US military to get out of the way, and the two sides quarreled in a mess.
