083. First month

A few days before the first month, I visited the village to pay New Year's greetings, and then visited relatives and friends to pay New Year's greetings. The relatives only went to visit New Year's greetings. When I came to your house, you also got my home. Relatives who did not come and went to pay New Year's greetings to each other. From the 1900s to the 1900s to visit relatives, there were few cars. Of course, only a small number of people took small cars. Now most people ride motorcycles to visit relatives.

The sound of firecrackers in the village suddenly broke and disappeared, and the coherence in his memory was gone. The strong smell of sulfur was everywhere, and Sun Gang opened his pores all over his body and sucked them all. In this breath, he seemed to smell joy, and saw people chatting their cups at the table, and heard those old-fashioned but sincere blessings.

In the first month of the year, the flowers bloom, and the Chinese New Year is busy everywhere in the countryside.

In the past, during the Spring Festival, I was busier than before. What were I busy with? I was busy posting couplets, setting off firecrackers, and visiting relatives everywhere to greet New Year's greetings. The most important thing was to be busy with food and clothing. Eating this is of great significance in the countryside.

In the past, productivity was underdeveloped, and rural people made a living by land, crops, and natural economy, and even a meal of rice felt luxurious. During the Chinese New Year, I had been working for a year of farm work, wasn’t it just to enjoy life during the Chinese New Year?

Even modern urban workers have finished their work for a year and earned some money to go back to their hometown for a few days. Just look at the Spring Festival travel situation every year.

Some people feel that the New Year is fast. They only take a few days, on the seventh or eighth day of the first lunar month, and those who work outside the country buy tickets early to catch up with the Spring Festival travel season, and the traffic is so crowded and exhausting.

Sun Gang had suffered from the Spring Festival travel rush before. After graduating from college, I just worked for the two years and went home every year for the New Year. I couldn’t buy tickets and had to stand for more than 20 hours before I got home. It would be great if I could have a place to stand.

Then, after the Chinese New Year, I couldn’t buy tickets, so I didn’t go home during the Spring Festival.

In the early days of the first lunar month, many guests came to the family. Grandpa and grandma were old, so their guests arranged for dinner at Sun Gang's house. There were also many relatives from their own home, so Sun Gang basically didn't go out to visit relatives. Except for Zhao Han's house to pay New Year's greetings on the third day of the lunar month, they stayed at home to help Sun's mother cook together.

There are also relatives from Wang Yan’s mother’s family who come to "return to the New Year". Return to the New Year means that the newly married couple goes to the woman’s house to pay New Year’s greetings. It’s only when they come back and forth. The woman’s relatives come to the man’s house to pay New Year’s greetings are called “return to the New Year”. Since it’s the first time that people come to the house, they are all Wang Yan’s elders, so they have to make the most sumptuous meals and let the guests eat and drink well.

There are so many guests in the first lunar month, basically two meals a day, so after a few days, I was very tired. When I was a child, my mother often said that she was too tired in the first lunar month. Sun Gang hadn’t experienced it much, but now she finally realized it. At that time, Sun Gang wanted guests to come to his house because only when the guests came, there were delicious food.

Sun Gang also has a few strange customs here, that is, before the third day of the first lunar month, the garbage at home cannot be dumped outside, and can only be piled behind the door. If you sweep outside, it means sweeping the wealth out.

Also, dry rice (rice) cannot be made before the sixth day of the first lunar month. Generally, only dumplings, steamed buns, or porridge steamed buns are eaten. There is no specific statement, it is just passed down from generation to generation.

Two days before the twelfth day of the first lunar month, Sun Gang went to the mountain to break a few cypress branches to burn cypress spirit fire.

Cypress trees are also called cypress trees. In rural areas, fire is called cypress fire. Their meanings are different. Cypress fire is the same as the same pronunciation of Bailing, which means that the whole family roasts cypress fire on the evening of the twelfth day of the first lunar month and all diseases are eliminated in one year, and all kinds of diseases are cured.

On the evening of the 12th day of the first lunar month, Sun's father set up a pile of firewood in the yard early, put two bricks (usually adobe) and left ventilation openings with two or three bundles of sesame rods in the middle, so that they can be burned after being ignited. Just put a few cypress branches on top, and you don't need too many cypress branches, just a few small ones. I mean, otherwise the cypress trees on the mountain would not be enough to make so many years of trouble.

After dinner, the whole family surrounded the fire.

Sun Gang's grandmother used a long cypress branch to rotate on the fire and swept it down from her family in turn, and at the same time she chanted auspicious words, such as sweeping the ears, not deaf, sweeping the eyes, not blurry, etc. When the fire is right, the family members jumped over the fire, and the elderly just walked by, and the old year has passed, so it is auspicious for the new year.

It is even more circulated among the people: when roasting cypress fire on the twelfth night of the first lunar month, take a white bun and grill it in the fire. Eat while it is hot, and all the old diseases will disappear in the year. This also represents the good health wish of the working people!

A group of people surrounded a small fire, some squatting on the inner layer, some standing on the outer layer stretching their arms, staggering, humble and ingenious. Soon, the fragrance of roasted steamed buns wafted out. Sun Gang looked at the burnt steamed buns and sucked them hotly while stealing his mouth, causing adults to laugh and scold them.

The Lantern Festival on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month is a traditional Chinese folk customs festival and the first important festival after the Spring Festival.

As the saying goes, "The fire at the age of thirty, the lantern at the age of fifteen", which means that on the evening of thirty, the red charcoal fire must be burned overnight, which describes the days of the day and the lanterns must be hung for a night. According to the custom, the fifteenth day of the first lunar month is considered to be the end of the New Year. Therefore, the Lantern Festival is connected with the Spring Festival. The day is the city, which is very lively, and the lanterns are lit at night, which is spectacular. Especially the exquisite and colorful lights make it the best for entertainment activities during the Spring Festival.

During the Lunar New Year, it is only the most lively New Year's Eve and Lantern Festival. When the Lantern Festival lights and flowers dissipate, a happy New Year is considered to be celebrated.

The Lantern Festival has always been highly valued by the people. During the Lantern Festival, in addition to lighting lanterns, watching lanterns, eating lanterns, and guessing riddles, the folk also has a variety of entertainment activities such as singing and dancing, dragon dance, lion dance, stilts, dancing yangko, and running dry boats. Their festiveness and liveliness are comparable to the Spring Festival. Therefore, people are accustomed to refer to a series of entertainment activities during the Lantern Festival as "Lantern Festival".

According to folk tradition, on this night when the moon is hanging high in the sky, people should light thousands of colorful lanterns to celebrate. Go out to enjoy the moon, burn the lights and set off flames, be happy to guess riddles, eat Lantern Festival together, reunite with their families, dance with the dragon together, celebrate the festival together, and have a happy life.

Since the custom of lanterns on the Lantern Festival was formed, it has been a grand event to watch lanterns on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month since ancient times.

During the Lantern Festival, riddles are played in every place, hoping that this year will be happy and safe. Because riddles can enlighten wisdom and be interested, they are very popular among all walks of life during their circulation.

Dance of the big dragon, also known as dragon lantern or dragon dance, is carried out in many parts of China. The Chinese nation advocates the dragon and regards the dragon as a symbol of auspiciousness.
