Chapter 784 Inspection

After contacting Colonel Paul, things went much smoother than before... At least Qin Chuan and others got several accurate defense maps of the Maginot defense line. The disadvantage is that the text on these defense maps is in French, so Qin Chuan had to ask Paul to find a Frenchman to translate it.

Obviously, these defense maps were seized from the French when the German army occupied the Maginot Line. They were much more accurate than the random pictures drawn by the German army... When the German army occupied the Maginot Line, they had a kind of contempt, ridicule, or it could be said to be arrogant. They believed that the French had worked hard to run the Maginot Line for more than ten years and invested countless manpower, but in the end, the material resources were broken through by the German army without any effect without a single shot. This is a complete joke.

In addition, the German army has been taking offensives for a while and even occupied the entire France, so they took it for granted that the Maginot line of defense was a waste and they did not need to care about Maginot's defense issues at all, because there would never be any enemy attacking here.

So, as Colonel Paul said, the German army mainly regarded this place as a training base for recruits, and of course they would not bother to draw any maps. There were only a few sketches in part, so it would be difficult for you to piece together these sketches with errors everywhere into a complete map. On the contrary, the maps seized from the French were much more complete.

From the map, the Maginot line of defense is 390 kilometers long, connecting the Metz Fortress, Saar, Lauter Fortress, Lower Rhine Fortress to the Belfort in northeastern France.

Colonel Slain and Qin Chuan visited the Metz Fortress area under the leadership of Colonel Paul.

"Objectively speaking!" Colonel Paul and the two introduced while walking in the spacious passage of underground fortifications: "This line of defense of the French should be called art. They always have a little romantic color, right? Just like French women!"

Speaking of this, Colonel Paul couldn't help laughing a few times, then looked at the map, and continued: "There are command posts, lounges, storage rooms, ammunition depots, ammunition stations, power stations, ventilation rooms, etc. Do you know? They even built small electric trains in the fortifications, and troops and ammunition can be easily transported to any point in the defense line through it!"

In fact, this does not require Colonel Paul's introduction at all. Qin Chuan and Colonel Slein also have a map in their hands, and they can clearly see the various facilities and specific data in the fortifications.

"God!" Colonel Slain exclaimed: "The French are simply crazy. They have built towns almost underground!"

"You are right, Colonel!" Paul replied: "They are underground towns, which have independent underground power supply equipment and fuel reserves, from kitchens, wine cellars and even dentist equipment, from prisons to morgues, as long as there are things on the ground. We have calculated that these towns can survive independently for three months without being cut off from the outside world. Then these towns are connected to each other and become a city! But now they can't hold on for so long!"

"Why?" asked Colonel Slain.

"Because we have basically consumed all the reserves here!" Paul spread his hands: "You know, the recruit training base, they all need food, use, especially the fuel for power generation... from the beginning, they were requisitioned and distributed to the armored forces!"

Qin Chuan was a little shocked by all this in front of him.

What Qin Chuan saw was not what Colonel Paul saw. Qin Chuan observed more about its defense system... Underground fortifications are combined with ground fortifications, and ground fortifications are combined with surrounding environments such as swamps and highlands. Each highland and each bunker are built on the key points of defense. Most of these bunkers have reinforced concrete 3.5 meters thick, and some are even 300MM thick steel plates.

The disadvantage of reinforced concrete fortifications is that if they are bombarded by artillery fire, they will be cut off by small pieces by shells. If the shells are large enough and strong enough, the fortification may eventually be destroyed.

But the 300MM thick steel plate... and the outside is still inclined. If the shell hits the head, it will bounce and bounce. Even if it does not bounce, it can withstand more shells due to the plasticity and strength of the steel plate.

More importantly, these steel plates, called "armored tower castles", can also rotate like tank gun tanks, which means that they do not need to be modified at all, and can directly turn the turret towards France.

It can be imagined that when the French designed this "tower castle", their purpose was to solve the problem of blind spots in sight and firepower of the bunker. Unexpectedly, it could be used by the enemy to turn to France.

If the Chinese volunteers used tunnel combat to block the US attack on the battlefield of resisting U.S. aggression and aiding Korea, then this Maginot Line... is undoubtedly a luxury version of tunnel.

Therefore, a kind of equipment or a line of defense cannot be said to be wrong or it is the cause of failure.

For example, the Germans also own rocket launchers, but the method and direction they use are incorrect, so they cannot exert the power of the Soviet "Katyusha" rocket launcher on the battlefield.

Similarly, the French have a luxurious version of tunnel fortifications, but the method of using it is "absolute defense", which is not like the tunnel warfare of the volunteers... The volunteers often have superficial positions occupied by the enemy, but the tunnels are still stationed, and then cooperate with the ground troops to attack the enemy outside the tunnels inside and outside to form defense in motion.

What's worse is that the French were negligent in training because of the Maginot Line of Defense, and turned themselves into an army that would not fight except defense, so there would be no other result except destruction.

"The first thing we have to do is to replenish the supplies here, including fuel, food, ammunition, etc." Qin Chuan said: "In addition, we also need a lot of maintenance workers to make all the facilities here, such as power stations, ventilation systems, and of course, electric trains, all of which are running!"

"Of course!" Colonel Paul replied, but hesitated for a while and said in embarrassment: "But..."

Colonel Slein and Qin Chuan both knew what was in a difficult situation for Colonel Paul. Lieutenant General Rumanlin was in the position of commander. He wanted to start such a large-scale maintenance and supply plan, without his cooperation.
