Chapter five hundred and eighty fifth paving tank
Tank paving cars were actually something that the Americans invented. They used it when they landed in Normandy... Normandy beaches were very soft and could not bear the weight of tanks. In order to allow the tank to land smoothly to provide firepower and cover for infantrymen, the Americans invented such paving tanks that could advance while paving the road.
Its structure is very simple, it is to add something like a conveyor belt on the top of the tank, and continuously transmit the paving objects strung together with steel wires from the rear to the front and then compact them with tracks. In the blink of an eye, a passage can be paved for the tank.
The only difference is... the paving tanks that the Americans have made are relatively taller, and the paving materials they use are steel plates.
Obviously, it was too difficult for the German army to find steel plates and string them together with iron wire. On the one hand, there was no material, and on the other hand, there was no need. The defense line built by the German army was only more than 700 meters away from the Soviet army. The roads between them were indeed muddy, but they were much better than the soft beach.
In fact, these roads are not a problem that cannot withstand tank pressure, but because mud is easy to slip. Once the tank is trapped in a certain pit, it will sink deeper and deeper. This is still fundamentally different from the beach, so it is enough to pave the road with logs.
Modern and modern Chinese and Soviet tanks generally carry a log behind them, in order to save themselves when the tank is trapped in the mud. (Note: This log is called "self-rescue wood")
Materials such as logs and steel cables are very easy to obtain on the Kerch Peninsula... Kerch Port is an ancient port city in Kerch. Outside the city, there are two large shipyards distributed in the north and south. (Note: Ukraine is an important shipbuilding industrial base in the Soviet Union)
The reason for the shipyards in the north and south is that the Kerch Peninsula and the Taman Peninsula are divided into the Azov Sea and the Black Sea across the sea. This is set up so that they can build ships in the Azov Sea and the Black Sea respectively.
These shipyards are full of logs with uniform thickness and hard materials, and of course there are many steel cables left behind... This is the effect of blitzkrieg. When the Soviet Union retreated, it was too late to move anything away, and even the shipbuilding machines were intact.
Next is the time for the engineers to perform. They first used machines to make a small hole in the two ends and the middle of the logs as thick as bowls, and then used iron cables to pass through the holes and then wrapped them around the logs for a few turns to make them stronger.
After they are strung one by one, they are piled up on the car that has been unloaded with the rear compartment for spare use.
Compared with these tasks, the modification of paving is simpler. It is to put an external conveyor belt on the top of the tank, and the motor directly removes one from the side three wheels, and the three tanks are modified in more than an hour.
However, the results of the trial were very frustrating.
The reason is that the teleportation logs and the tank's advance speed are inconsistent...
If the transmission speed is too slow, the tank will be unable to get logs to pave the road for a long time, which may cause the paving tank to fall into the mud and all its efforts will be wasted.
If the transmission speed is too fast, it will lead to the amount of logs accumulated in front of the tank and become an obstacle.
"Try again!" Major Edmund, the commander of the engineer battalion, ordered: "The tank maintains a speed of 22 kilometers per hour!"
"Yes, Major!" the soldiers responded.
This time the progress was very smooth. The logs were laid in rows in front of the tanks, and the tracks rolled them on the ground, and the shipyard couldn't help but cheer.
"General!" Major Edmund reported to Manstein, who was watching next to him: "This method is obviously feasible, but there are still some difficulties, such as the coordination between tanks and log-loading cars. I suggest that they do some necessary training first, and I think it is necessary to equip the tank crew and the car room with communication equipment!"
Mann Tain nodded and said, "Whatever you think you need, do what you need, all I need is it useful on the battlefield!"
"Yes, General!"
While the shipyard was busy, the German soldiers on the front line were not idle. They kept firing a row of shells on the Soviet defense line and launched a tentative attack on the Soviet defense line from time to time.
Of course, this kind of attack is no longer for breaking through the enemy's defense line, but for harassment and fire reconnaissance.
The purpose of harassment is to increase the psychological pressure of the Soviet army and consume their physical strength... This is especially effective for new recruits. New recruits are always very excited at the beginning of the battle and devote all their energy to the battle at all costs. However, this tight and shattered state of chicken blood obviously cannot last long, and they will soon feel exhausted.
Most of the Soviet army's teams were recruits, and this tactic was just right at this time. There were even a few soldiers in the Soviet camp who couldn't stand this pressure and jumped out of the trenches to charge towards the German trenches... This kind of charge was purely a psychological collapse and didn't want to live.
Fire reconnaissance mainly focuses on finding the location of the tank from the enemy's trenches.
The Soviet tanks were quite powerful against the Germans, because in addition to the KV tanks, the Soviet army also had a T34 with excellent performance.
If this were at other times, the German armored soldiers were not afraid of T34, because they had found a way to deal with T34... using the weaknesses that the Soviet communication equipment was behind the inability to coordinate between tanks, and concentrated their efforts to defeat them one by one. Among them, the Soviet command tanks were given priority to destroying the Soviet command tanks. When the command tanks were destroyed, the Soviet tanks would be in chaos and fight each other. (Note: The Soviet command tanks have two antennas, one for sending and the other for receiving. Ordinary tanks only have one receiving antenna, which means they can only passively receive commands.)
But the situation is a little different now.
The German army was going to fight a paving battle, that is, the tanks were paving the road while advancing. This would have a disadvantage, that is, the trajectory of the advance is easily estimated by the enemy, so the enemy could block it with tanks or artillery fire.
In order to avoid the trouble caused by this, the German army needed to find the Soviet tank locations as much as possible, and then let the air force blow them up one by one.
In this regard, the German army was very successful. After a few hours of this attack by the German army, there were only more than ten left. Among them, only one T34 tank that threatened the German army, and the rest were irrelevant light tanks.
On the other hand, the German reconnaissance planes reconnaissed the location of the Soviet army's hidden artillery positions.
Manstein did not immediately strike the artillery position because he believed that if bombing was carried out now, the enemy would likely recover and reorganize in a few hours.
