Chapter 292: Aircraft, Submarines, Victory in the First Battle

This book is coming to an end, and the updates in the past one or two weeks will be accelerated. Thank you for your support and encouragement to my friends. The new book "Thunder of the War of Resistance" has been uploaded. I hope everyone can continue to support it. I would like to express my sincere thanks here.

***************************************************************************

On August 23, 1914, with Okuma's announcement of the declaration to China, the Japanese Second Fleet, which had arrived outside Jiaozhou Bay, immediately began the channel cleaning work.

The artillery of the Chinese team, who took over the German coastal defense fortress, immediately opened fire and fired at the minesweeping ships sent by Japan with heavy artillery of Krupp Fortress. The war between the two countries began without declaring war on both sides.

The Chinese team has 130 shore defense cannons left by the Germans (very powerful) and has a strong fortress. There are hundreds of mines laid out in Jiaozhou Bay. Facing the fierce Japanese fleet, they are not showing weakness, and they are fighting fiercely.

"Arrogant!" Standing on the bridge of the Satsuma battleship, Lieutenant General Kato Tachiyoshi, commander of the Second Japanese Fleet, gently pieced the telegram into a ball, threw it on the deck, and raised his telescope to look towards the coast.

The Chinese President has just delivered a speech to the Congress on resisting aggression and fighting to the end, and announced China's wartime measures, mainly including: demarcating the coastal areas of Qingdao into combat areas. If the Japanese army makes military moves beyond this combat area, it will be regarded as a comprehensive invasion of China. China will definitely make the most severe military retaliation and even attack on Japan's mainland; completely stopping commercial exchanges with Japan, prohibiting all materials from leaving Hong Kong to Japan, and controlling Japanese overseas Chinese...

In Kato's view, China's above actions were arrogant and stupid, and it was completely angering Japan. In the combat area, huh, Japan did not simply aim to seize Qingdao. Instead, after obtaining Qingdao, it continued to advance to the hinterland of Shandong and occupy the Jiaoji Railway and Jinan, so that they could be satisfied. Interrupted commercial exchanges and interrupted the supply of mineral resources. Hum, after Japan defeated, it would gain more and greater benefits.

Yes, everything is aimed at defeating. In a world where the strong prey on the weak, justice and morality are nothing more than fig leafs. If necessary, fig leafs can also be torn off.

Although now, unlike during the Russo-Japanese War, Britain and France cannot give Japan money and material support, and even act cautious in diplomacy, and the United States is even more dissatisfied with Japan. But these are not important. When Japan wins, these guys will also pounce on it and get a piece of the pie. Facing reality is always the norm that qualified politicians must follow.

Buzzing, accompanied by a strange sound, several black dots flew from the sky, getting bigger and bigger.

There are three Chinese reconnaissance aircraft. Kato raised his telescope and stared at the national flag logo on the fuselage and frowned. As soon as he approached Qingdao, the Chinese team's plane came to reconnaissance, and his fleet also carried two seaplanes (Ruomiya seaplane mothership), with a total of four Newport-style seaplanes! Two of them have taken off to reconnaissance, and they should come back to report the situation now.

For hundreds of years, the cavalry has regarded themselves as the eyes of the army because it can search for enemy situations and report them to the command center.

However, when the aircraft develops, the role of the cavalry is greatly reduced. Because an aircraft can quickly complete reconnaissance missions at an altitude of hundreds of feet and quickly send intelligence to the command center.

After the aircraft was invented, it was quickly used for military purposes and was mainly used for reconnaissance. However, the aircraft was not equipped with weapons at that time. At that time, the plane flew slowly and steadily, and pilots and observers could "comfortably" observe the ground situation from the plane and take photos with cameras. There was no need for armor and weapons on the plane. Pilots from both hostile sides often saluted or waved to each other cordially when they met in the air.

Kobayashi Keiyama was returning in a seaplane, next to it was another seaplane.

The sky was blue and the vision was wide, but Kobayashi had no intention of appreciating it. There was always a question in his heart, which might be a hidden worry. At the beginning of the war in Qingdao, the disappearance of two seaplanes made him feel that it was not as simple as the crash speculated by the command center. But he couldn't think of any other reason.

At this time, three Chinese Air Force aircraft were performing school shooting and alert missions, and Keiyama Kobayashi and another Japanese aircraft were getting closer and closer.

Chen Zhong felt very depressed because he was flying a fighter plane, which could fight, but there were no Japanese planes for him to shoot. When he went back to write an application, it was more satisfying to transfer to the bomber brigade. He imagined the scene of dropping a bomb and blowing the enemy to the flesh and blood.

A friend plane suddenly swayed left and right, showing that he had discovered the situation. Chen Zhong couldn't help but feel excited. Could it be that the world fulfilled his wish and had a chance to fight?

Kobayashi Jingshan found three Chinese planes flying towards him, and was not very scared because he didn't know that Chinese planes had the ability to shoot down him.

Although the aircraft has been used for military purposes for a long time, equipping weapons on the aircraft is not yet valued by all parties, and there are also technical difficulties.

Of course, some courageous and "provocative" pilots felt that letting enemy pilots fly planes to conduct reconnaissance over their own side was a "humiliation" of themselves. Therefore, some hostile actions and various "air combat weapons" have begun to appear.

During the Mexican Civil War, an American pilot hired by the peasant army once shot at each other with a pistol in the air with a pilot of the Mexican government army's only reconnaissance aircraft. In addition to shooting with pistols, the pilot sometimes brought several bricks and arrows as "weapons" to smash the propellers of the opponent's planes.

Russian pilot Nestalov was even more "creative". He actually installed a knife on the back of the fuselage and prepared to use it to cut the skin of the other party's fuselage. This can really be called the "breaking belly" tactic. Another Russian pilot, Kazakov, also had a unique approach. He installed a steel cable and a grapple hook at the bottom of the aircraft, and a **** was connected to the grapple hook. He tried to grab the enemy plane with the grapple hook and use the grapple to destroy the enemy plane.

However, these are just air combat that seem very nonsensical, and are incomparable to machine guns on Chinese planes. Kobayashi Keiyama would never have thought that he would be the first aircraft to be shot down in air combat and would be imprisoned in China for several years in the form of prisoners of war.

Chen Zhong was very happy and finally had the opportunity to show his skills. He sent a signal as a long-range aircraft that this one belongs to me and that one belongs to you. Then he controlled the plane and walked around the back of the enemy aircraft.

After the aircraft is equipped with machine guns, how to occupy a favorable shooting position in air combat has become a crucial issue for the Chinese Air Force research. Through practical experience, the pilots found that the attack effect is the best behind the enemy plane, followed by head-on attack, and the attack effect is the worst on the front side of the enemy plane. Therefore, the pilots tried to occupy the most favorable position, that is, to go around the opponent's tail and shoot.

It is obvious that Chen Zhong's purpose is to be safe and must not let the hard-won prey slip away. But his companions were obviously more impatient than him. After receiving his signal, they rushed forward to a Japanese plane. After reaching the right distance, they opened fire violently, and a tongue of flame flew towards the Japanese plane.

The Japanese plane was caught off guard and was shot in the air by machine guns, and it was planted downwards with thick smoke and fire.

Kobayashi Jingshan was shocked and hurriedly turned around the nose and prepared to escape. Chen Zhong pulled the nose and chased him reluctantly, and another Chinese fighter jet also came to intercept him.

Although the aircraft's flight performance was not high at this time and could only perform flat flights and small slopes, the performance of Chinese aircraft was much better than that of bulky seaplanes with buoys.

Although Kobayashi Keishan also made evasion actions, he still did not escape the fierce pursuit of the two planes. The plane was hit and started to smoke, and then the flames also rose. Kobayashi Keijiu tried hard to control the plane that was about to lose control and planted towards the pond not far away...

Kato was stunned, the Japanese were stunned, and their minds were blank after witnessing the world's first air battle.

Chinese planes began to hover over the Japanese fleet again, and Kato could see the pilot's appearance clearly in the telescope. After a while, one of them continued to fly towards the distant sea, while the other two were still hovering over the busy Japanese ships near the sea, and smoke bombs of various colors were emitted from time to time. The heavy artillery of the coastal fortress roared again, spitting out flames and smoke.

When shooting the plane, Kato saw an old sea defense ship ripped up a pillar of fire in the explosion. The Japanese soldiers waiting on the deck waiting for the transfer boat were not only very casualties, but many soldiers were thrown into the sea as the ship vibrated. Then, another ship was hit and caught fire.

Just as the Japanese were still immersed in the shocking thinking that aircraft could fight air combat, the Chinese Air Force used new tricks. Four airships suddenly flew. Unlike the load load of the aircraft at that time, the airship could carry thousands of kilograms of cargo.

Of course, the airship flying to the heads of the Japanese dropped bombs, each of which was 500 kilograms. Because the airship could fly very slowly and even hover in the air, there was still a lack of effective air-to-air weapons at that time. Therefore, the airship bombing seemed very easy, with sixteen bombs hitting a high hit of thirteen, and the bombing of six Japanese ships were damaged.

The successive blows made the Japanese furious, but Kato had some ominous premonition. This was completely beyond his expectations, and the war seemed to have become strange.

Soon, Kato's ominous premonition became a reality. This blow came not from the air, but from the killer hidden under the sea.

The rumbling sound of cannons shook the sea. Behind the entire Japanese fleet was a wide sea. The artillery battles in front were fierce, so it seemed calm here.

An object quietly stretched out of the sea. Through the periscope, Zhou Jing, the captain of the V-3 submarine, saw the outside world. For those living on the submarine, it was really a pleasure to take a look at the scenery on the water. But at this time, Zhou Jing was not greedy for "color", but was just focused on searching for the first "good meal". When he saw dozens of Japanese ships of different ranks and sizes anchored at the sea, his excitement was unstoppable.

Japan's large warships all acted arrogantly, and the towering chimneys spewed out white smoke balls from time to time. Rows of shells roared out from the warships and flew straight towards the coastal positions. Around these large warships, some small ships rushed back and forth like shuttles, acting as bodyguards.

Zhou Jing had finished his observation and thought to himself that if you want to fight, you have to fight a big fight, otherwise it would not be enough to shock the enemy's morale. Moreover, Japan's large warships seem to be unsuspecting and are prone to surprise victory. Small warships are not worth fighting, but they pose a great threat to submarines. Once they appear, they will run away desperately.

The V-3 submarine bypassed several Japanese warships and quietly sailed towards the coast. It was like a hungry wolf foraging, and would pounce on it whenever it had a chance. About half an hour later, Zhou Jing saw a King Kong-class battlecruiser and also saw two Japanese destroyers cruising around the King Kong-class battlecruiser.

It should not be difficult to kill the King Kong-class battlecruiser. The difficult thing is how to get out after the battle begins. After pondering for a while, Zhou Jing felt that it was impossible to launch an attack without protection from the King Kong-class battlecruiser. It is not a long-term solution to drag it down. Opportunities must not be missed, and you must act immediately.

"The first and second tubes of torpedo on the front of the ship are ready to fire!" Zhou Jingheng was determined to take a risk.

"Prepare to release!"

Two torpedoes flew out of the launch tube and headed straight for the King Kong-class battlecruiser.

"Boom! Boom!" The deafening explosion sounded throughout the sky. The King Kong-class battlecruiser jumped suddenly like a giant being stung by a bee. When it fell back into the water, a huge white column of water soared into the sky.

Both torpedoes hit the target, and one hit the fuel compartment of the King Kong-class battlecruiser, causing a series of explosions, and the raging fires reddish the sea. The fragments of the explosion were mixed with water and scattered like hail.

In the fierce battle, a moment of tranquility suddenly appeared miraculously. Both the Japanese army and the Chinese defenders turned their attention to the giant that suffered disaster.

Just a quarter of an hour later, the King Kong-class battlecruiser had already capsized and sank, and no effort could save its fate. The sea was crying and sank Japanese officers and soldiers, and several small ships rushed over to rescue them at a rapid speed, and the scene was in chaos.

A long-lasting cheer broke out from the positions of the Chinese defenders, and some soldiers shed tears of excitement. The rampant enemies were punished one after another, so of course they would cheer for it.

Zhou Jing was also happy for the victory in the first battle, but more important things made him busy. When the V-3 submarine launched the torpedo, the torpedo's trajectory was discovered by a Japanese destroyer. In order to avoid the search of the Japanese ship, Zhou Jing thought hard, and a brilliant and bold idea surged into his heart.

Zhou Jing did not control the submarine to escape, but directed it to hide around the sinking Japanese ship. This was very risky and could lose balance at any time under the impact of powerful vortex. However, doing so also made the Japanese army never dream of the most dangerous place the safest. Zhou Jing commanded all the crew and carefully maintained the stability of the submarine.

Sure enough, the Japanese destroyer was busy for a while and searched for a long time. He did not see any trace of the submarine. He thought it had fled, so he turned to normal patrol and rescue. Zhou Jing seized the opportunity and drove the submarine through a series of underwater movements and successfully escaped from the tiger's mouth.

But the V-3 submarine did not sail far away. It quietly turned to the other side. After careful observation, Zhou Jing selected his prey again, which was an old battleship. Although the ship was already very old and seemed a little old, its huge body was still daunting. Zhou Jing did not want to wait any longer, because the Japanese army had obviously raised their vigilance. Not only did the destroyers and other warning ships defended strictly, but they also began to set up torpedo nets.

The firepower on this old battleship was still very strong. It bombarded the fortress stationed by the Zhongzhang Team with rumbling artillery fire, but unexpectedly, a pair of hatred eyes had already stared at it from under the sea.

Zhou Jing directed the submarine to approach quietly, then drove the submarine to turn around and aimed the torpedo from the tail of the boat at the target.

"The torpedo at the stern is ready to be launched!" Zhou Jing gave a decisive order, and then he shouted loudly: "Prepare to release!"

After launching the torpedo, Zhou Jing immediately directed the submarine to dive. The submarines operated nervously, listened with their ears, and waited for the arrival of an unusual moment. Ten seconds, twenty seconds, thirty seconds... A loud "boom" came, and everyone breathed a sigh of relief.

The torpedo hit the side of the Japanese ship, and the sea water poured in from a huge hole. The Japanese officers and soldiers tried to block the hole, but their efforts eventually failed. Fortunately, because the waters of the Japanese ship were shallow, the upper layer was exposed to the water after the ship sank, and some Japanese officers and soldiers survived by chance.

The Sino-Japanese War in Qingdao began in a way that surprised the experts. The Chinese Navy dispatched eight submarines to carry out effective attacks on the Japanese fleet gathered on the Qingdao sea, achieving great results.

Six of the eight submarines participating in the battle attacked, launching 19 torpedoes, sinking nine Japanese ships, including a King Kong-class battlecruiser, an old battleship, a second-class cruiser, and six transport ships, with a total tonnage of 34,000 tons. On the other hand, the Chinese Navy was also sunk and injured one submarine.

In the late 19th century, with the rise of Mahan's "sea power theory" idea, the "big ships and giant cannons" idea overwhelmed everything. The giant battleships at sea were spoiled, and submarines, like other ship types, could only serve as foils for battleships. Before the war, no one could predict that the submarine would play a role in naval battles, so, except for Germany and China, submarines did not fully develop their submarine power, let alone effective anti-submarine methods.

Without submarine detectors and sonar, the submarine is like a bright dragon in the water, almost at the point where you can stroll on the sea as you wish.

British affairs observers first realized the threat they had faced. As an island country, maritime shipping is a matter of life and death. China and Germany carried out close cooperation in submarine manufacturing and combat before the war. China was weaker than Germany and had achieved such achievements. Once Germany established a more trained submarine force before the war, it would pose a great threat to Britain.
