Chapter 6 Tan Sitong

In the 24th year of the Guangxu period, September 20, 1898, this day will be destined to be the darkest day in Chinese history. From this day on, the reform movement that represents China's progress, self-rescue and awakening will be completely killed!

A coup that completely dragged China into poverty and was at mercy and was slaughtered.

The master of the coup was Cixi, but the vanguard of the coup came from another era and was inexplicably involved in Li Guoyong.

Looking at the dark soldiers below, Li Guoyong was confused.

"Sir, brothers are all ready, sir, look?" asked a member of the inner nine gates carefully.

Li Guoyong looked at this guy with disgust, wishing he could kick him far away, suppressing his annoyance, and said in a calm tone: "Mr. Du, where should I start first?"

The Qiang General named Du Ziqi deliberately cursed the newly favored immediate boss in front of him: "Sir, from the perspective of the lower officials, he must first capture Kang Liang and Tan of the Restoration Party. This is the first merit. Of course, this merit is my master. The lower officials will take five hundred soldiers to arrest the other traitors, and they will also benefit from some light."

Looking at this flattery, Li Guoyong had a plan (actually, Li Guoyong forgot that he was the number one flattery in Tianzi), and he smiled: "What's the matter with Lord Du? We both serve the Empress Dowager and the future will be relied on each other. How dare I be greedy for merit? It's better to do this. I took half of the people to capture Tan Sitong, Kang Guangren, Lin Xu, Liu Guangdi. As for Kang Youwei, Liang Qichao, Yang Rui, and Yang Shenxiu, you will have to work for Lord Du."

Du Zi was so beautiful that he was so beautiful that Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao were the leader of the reformist school. He was caught by himself. It was not impossible for the Empress Dowager to make a governor or something.

Li Guoyong looked at this guy who was so happy that he was dancing with joy, and he sneered in his heart and went to have fun. When you were crying, according to Li Hongzhang's promise to send a secret letter today, one hour ago, Li Hongzhang should have sent someone to inform Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao of this arrest. It is really a strange story in the world that you can catch them. He stopped him and wanted to pretend to refuse Du Ziqi: "Mr. Du doesn't have to give in. I think that's it. Let's do it."

At this time, in Mangcangcangzhai in Liuyang Guild Hall, a burly man was in Tan Sitong who was unmoved by persuading him hard: "Third brother, go quickly. The two adults, Kang Liang, sent an urgent letter half an hour ago. Beixi's imperial decree has been issued, and the reform has failed. The two adults are afraid that they are now in the Japanese embassy, and I, Wang Wu, will send you out even if I fight to the death!"

This great man turned out to be a hero in the late Qing Dynasty, the Great Sword King Wu.

Tan Sitong still shook his head and smiled: "A real man doesn't do things, but he's just doing things, so he's just going to be honest. How can he be jealous of death? All reforms in various countries are all caused by blood. Today, there is no news in China that bleeds due to reforms. This country is not prosperous. For some, please start with Sitong." (Tan Sitong's original words)

Wang Wu was still waiting for persuasion, and Tan Sitong shook his hand to stop him, untied the sword from his body, and handed it to Wang Wu: "Fifth Brother, I have decided, there is no need to persuade him anymore. This sword is called "Feng Ju". I will give it to the fifth brother. I hope that the fifth brother will use this sword to wipe out all the injustice in the world with the seventh brother (Wang Wu's sworn brother Hu Qi)! I am enough!"

The sound of horse hooves in the distance was getting closer and closer. Wang Wu knew that it was impossible to persuade him again, so he knelt down with Hu Qi beside him: "Third brother, I, Wang Wu, here I swear that as long as I still have a breath, I will avenge my third brother!"

It was the big sword Wang Wu and Hu Qi who almost successfully assassinated Li Guoyong later. Of course, this is a story later.

Tan Sitong looked at Wang Wuhu Qi who jumped onto the roof with tears in his eyes and walked out of Mangcang Cangzhai calmly with a smile.

With a "bang", the gate of the Liuyang Guild Hall was smashed open, and a large group of soldiers rushed in with young people of about twenty years.

Tan Sitong smiled faintly and said, "You are here too late. Mr. Tan has been there for a long time. I wonder which lord led the soldiers?"

Although the leading young man Li Guoyong knew from history that Tan Sitong was ready to die, he was still impressed by Tan Sitong's behavior: "Let's go to Li Guoyong."

After hearing this name, Tan Sitong's face changed slightly: "It turns out that he is Lord Li, who was named third-class guard by the emperor."

"Bold!" A soldier next to him scolded: "This is the first-class guard personally appointed by the Empress Dowager, Lord Li, the chief commander of the bandit suppression!"

Tan Sitong showed a sarcastic look on his face: "No wonder, Lord Li has been promoted. Congratulations to Lord Tan!"

Li Guoyong sighed and took out Cixi's edict from his sleeve, reciting: "Kang Youwei, the head of the Ministry of Investigation and Works, Liang Qichao, the assistant director of the Book Translation and Bookstore, and the military machine, the Jinjing, Tan Sitong, did not immerse the emperor's kindness, plotted to rebel, and handed over to the infantry commander's yamen to relieve the Ministry of Justice for interrogation, I admire this!"

Tan Sitong was still as calm and composed: "The emperor would not issue such an edict, and Tan Sitong refused to accept the edict!"

Li Guoyong shook his head helplessly: "Mr. Tan, please!"

In the 24th year of the Guangxu period, on the night of September 20, 1898, Tan Sitong was arrested at Mangcangcangzhai; Yang Rui was arrested on the bed; Lin Xu was taken while on duty at the Military Affairs Office; Kang Guangren, Liu Guangdi, and Yang Shenxiu did not miss the net.

Kang Youwei, who received the news in advance, Liang Qichao first avoided the Japanese Embassy, and then fled overseas under the protection of Li Hongzhang, who was then the governor of Guangdong and Guangxi.

On September 21, Cixi suddenly returned to the palace from the Summer Palace. After scolding Guangxu, she issued an edict in the name of Emperor Guangxu, and announced the "training" on the grounds that "I am not hesitating" and took over the power to handle government affairs." Later, she ordered Guangxu to be placed under house arrest in the Hanyuan Hall of Yuantai, Nanhai, and sent a trusted eunuch to strictly supervise him, cutting off all contacts with the outside world.

When he was passed by Li Guoyong, he saw the extremely hatred for him in Guangxu's eyes.

At this point, the vigorous reform movement failed. This reform started on June 11, 1898 and ended on September 21, for a total of 103 days, known in history as the "100-day Reform".

Tan Sitong in prison was calm and had already put his life and death aside. He also wrote a touching poem "Inscription on the Wall in Prison" that was passed down from history: Looking at the door and thinking of Zhang Jian, enduring death for a moment, waiting for Du Gen. I smiled at the sky with my own sword, leaving my heart and courage.

On the afternoon of September 28, Tan Sitong and six others were taken from the Ministry of Justice Prison to question the execution ground at Caishikou outside Xuanwu Gate in the south of Beijing. Before his death, Tan Sitong recited a desperate poem loudly: "If you are determined to kill the thief, you are powerless to return to the sky. If you die, how happy it is!" Then he made a generous statement: "In order to save the country, I am willing to shed my blood. But today, everyone's sacrifice will stand up and continue the reform work."

The military minister Gangyi, who was in charge of the execution, was afraid that Tan Sitong would say anything else, so he hurriedly ordered the beheading of Tan Sitong and six others with the "General" who killed officials.

The heads of Tan Sitong and others were ordered to be hung on the execution ground for three days. Liu Fengchi, the custodian of Liuyang Guild Hall, risked his death on the afternoon of the same day to transport Tan Sitong's headless body back to the Liuyang Guild Hall. Three days later, Liu Fengchi retrieved Tan's head and asked someone to sew the body, and temporarily buried it after the burial. The next year, Liu Fengchi escorted Tan's coffin back to the foot of the stone mountain outside Liuyang City, Hunan for formal burial.

Yuan Shikai, who made contributions to informing the Wuxu coup, was appointed as the governor of Shandong in 1899 and gradually approached the power center of the Qing court. Another Li Guoyong, who made contributions to suppressing the reform, was valued by Cixi faster than Yuan Shikai.

This little hooligan who came from more than a hundred years later stood at the forefront of a big era because of a car accident.

In 1898, China was about to be in full swing!
