Chapter 79 Meeting

In the winter of the fourth year of Wanli, the first Council of Monks of the Peruvian Governor's District was held at the Santo Domingo Church in the center of the Plaza de Armas in Lima on the bank of the Rima River.

To convene this meeting, Father Acosta started preparing three months ago, focusing on Peru, convening missionaries from all over the Americas to the city of Lima.

Not every missionary bought Acosta’s tent, but when Acosta, wearing a monk’s robe, stood in the corridor at the entrance of the church in the Arms Square to greet monks from all over the country, his weathered face still showed relief.

"It's much easier than I thought. Although people may not be interested in the Indians, they still come."

Not only monks who preached from all over the world, but also nobles, captains and even mercenary monks who were in Lima at this time, the people who believed in Catholicism, rushed shoulder to shoulder from the harbor and narrow streets, gathered at the entrance of the Twin Towers Cathedral, and worshiped the remains of Saint Rosa, the first saint in America, in front of the exquisite altar.

It was the arrival of the Ming envoy who attracted more people from all over the world. Most of them were indifferent to the issue of whether the Indians could have human rights, property rights, and right to survival. They came more for the Acosta.

Everyone knows that Acosta, who preached in Peru for three years, had an extraordinary desire for knowledge. Although he always wanted to give the Indians the status of fair and equal people, he knew more about the affairs of the Ming Kingdom than others. People came here to join his council for this - discussing about the Ming Kingdom.

In fact, there is no word "Indian". Because "Indian" and "Indian" are the same word, the word used in the United States by the 21st century was "Native Americans" to refer to "Indians". The so-called "Indians" are just Chinese transliterations of "Indians".

Because of Columbus' misconception, he sailed west from the book of the King of Spain to the Great Khan of China, named the Latin American archipelago the West Indies, and called the locals the "Indians", and then spread.

When believers wearing various costumes entered the church one by one from the seventh vertical and thirteen horizontal stone road, Father Acosta followed him to the altar and recited a few verses devoutly as the opening remarks. He glanced at the believers of all faces in the audience and opened his hood and said, "Thank you for your worship together. I believe you all know that the strongholds set up along the western coast of Mexico had been swept away by the Indians in the north some time ago."

"They plundered the church, burned the port, and killed all the soldiers in the stronghold."

"The French who landed in the east were also defeated by the brown natives named the Iroquois."

The French were only a little later than the Spanish landed in the Americas, and their first explorer, Verasano, was eaten after failing to fight the natives in the Caribbean in fifty years ago.

Their luck was more than a little worse than that of the Spaniards. They still failed to establish any permanent strongholds along the eastern coast of North America after fifty years. They were often swept away by the indigenous people within a few years.

This is not because the French colonial team was too weak, and the same happened to the Spaniards in North America. Over the decades, the Spanish established strongholds in Mexico were often swept away. The combat effectiveness of North American natives was far higher than that of their brothers in South America.

"Everyone is very clear that over the past few decades, we have discovered that humans have many different races, their population size, development, technology, language, customs, organizational composition and beliefs all have huge differences."

"So we must admit that the barbarians have long surpassed the barbaric state."

The Spanish in the church booed proudly. Even in the solemn church, these planters and mercenary leaders were not so pious. People who grew up under the deeply rooted superior racial policy were laughing loudly: "Then they are also barbarians!"

"Yes, they are savages, and savages will win for a while, but they won't win forever."

Even Acosta was not immune to this point. He laughed twice and then said: "In the face of so many people who are completely different in terms of the level and nature of culture, we cannot classify them, nor understand and communicate and negotiate with them in the same way; therefore, in order to approach them, deal with them, reason with them, and convert them to Catholicism, we should elaborate and choose different ways of spiritual guidance to Christians."

Mission is a magical means that can transform enemies into us in peace and can help them rule, economy, military and culture, and never be seen separately. Europeans of this era are well aware of this.

"After a long and careful study, I found that no matter how many different types of parishes and races there were, these savages could be divided into three levels like the following, with great differences between them, but in fact, this division method applies to all Indians."

"The first rank is composed of people who have not yet been far from the true reason and practice of mankind. They have first a stable kingdom ruled by governments, a state-run laws, strong cities, prestigious chief executives, prosperous and well-organized trade, and more important than anything else, the frequent use of words. Because unless these people are cultured and knowledgeable, or first of all politically organized, it is impossible to find a legacy of words or books in them."

"The Ming people seemed to be in this rank first, because I have seen their writings, which are very similar to those of the Syrians; due to the large number of books, outstanding schools, the prestige of the law and officials, and the grand national historical buildings, they were transcribed to create a high level of culture. The second was the Japanese..."

"These people, although they are actually barbaric and uncivilized, and in many ways differ from their rationality and natural laws, must accept the gospel salvation just as the early Greek and Romans were summoned by the twelve apostles of Jesus. Because of their remarkable power and human wisdom, we must fight them over and convert them to Catholicism through their self-thinking with God's help."

“If we insist on using force and power to bring them to Christ, it will only keep them completely away from the Christian code of conduct.”

"In the view of the war with Ming Dynasty is extremely absurd, and I do not think it is legal or just for the war against China." And later said: "There are so many governments and talents, and there are industry and wealth, the power of countless peoples, and the strong city defense, etc., a war will surely lead to the most serious destruction and terror of Christians."
