The benevolent beheading

Back to the battlefield in Huainan, Chai Rong left, the Southern Tang Dynasty successively recovered the states. Zhu Yuan recovered Shu, and two states, Li Ping took Qizhou, and Chuzhou's Zhou Dynasty guards also learned Xiang Xun, Han Lingkun gave up the city on his own. Chai Rong's battle in Huainan suddenly disappeared. The most serious one is more than this. The two highest leaders in the front line of military administration: the head of the guards, the head of Guo Wei's nephew Li Chongjin, and the head of the front department of the hall, and the son-in-law of Guo Wei, had a conflict. Zhang Dianjian grabbed a Tang army spy on the front line of Xia Cai (the floating bridge has moved from Zhengyang to Xia Cai): I am here to contact General Li Chongjin. General Li is going to cooperate with us. Zhang Yongde immediately sent a secret letter to Kaifeng: As soon as you leave, Li Chongjin will rebel.

There was more than just Zhang Yongde's secret letter in front of Chai Rong. There was another one, no. two secret letters. One was from Li Chongjin, and the other was from Tang Lord Li Jing.

Li Chongjin also caught a spy from Tang army. After searching, he found a letter of advice from Tang Lord Li Jing: You will return to Henan, how do I do it...

"Why do you think I have the potential to be a traitor?" The envoy stepped forward and laughed, "General Li, you are older than Chai Rong and are the nephew of your late emperor. But why did your late emperor pass the throne in Chai Rong instead of you? This is an injustice to the general. Even if the general is generous, I am afraid that Chai Rong will be suspicious of the general. If the general returns to our southern country, our country's lord will give him a heavy army to the north. At that time, the throne of the Central Plains will return to the general." Jin nodded and asked, "Are you finished talking?" The envoy looked up and said, "It's over" and went in. "Left and left! Drag the spy out and beheaded." The envoy was very panicked. "Why" Li Chongjin was unwilling to explain. On that day, I bowed my head and admitted defeat and was convinced.

After killing the lobbyist, Li Chongjin studied a letter and delivered it to the imperial court with Li Jing's secret letter. Three letters were placed in front of Chai Rong. It was obvious who was wrong to whom. It was hateful that Li Jing could not beat him and was so foolish. In anger, Sun Sheng became a scapegoat. He was killed in Bianliang on November 17, 3rd year of Xiande (956), which also fulfilled his oath of "to never let down Yongling (Li Bian's tomb) a cup of soil" when he came to be a negotiator that day.

Chai Rong knew that Li Chongjin was loyal, but Zhang Yongde didn't know. Over time, some words would always reach Li Chongjin's ears. One day in late October, Li Chongjin rode alone to Xia Cai and entered Zhang Yongde's military camp. After a calm banquet and a heart-to-heart talk, he finally broke up the gap between the two generals and began to attack Liu Renzhan's Shouzhou City together.

Before this, Shouzhou City had been besieged for nearly a year, and Liu Renshan was struggling to wait for assistance. However, the reinforcements either stopped halfway or were completely wiped out by Zhou soldiers. The worst thing was that some reinforcements helped the worse.

Although Li Jingda, who was defeated in six and lost all his prestige, had 50,000 troops stationed in Haozhou, his military power was no longer in his hands. The military supervisor Chen Jue turned the support into support.

In August of the third year of Xiande (956), Lin Renzhao (known as Lin Huzi, a famous general in the Southern Tang Dynasty. His reputation even made Zhao Kuangyin deeply afraid) led a water and land reinforcements to Xia Cai. He wanted to learn from Zhou Yu's fire attack plan to burn Xia Cai's floating bridge. However, he did not have the ability of Zhuge Kongming to use the east wind. The sudden change of wind direction of 180 degrees made Lin Renzhao scold the sky and the earth and urgently ordered him to retreat. Zhang Yongde called for luck and returned to the camp to ask his subordinates, knowing that this plan was used by Zhou Yu in Chibi, and Cao Cao used an iron cable to connect the ship and returned home. Oh, iron cable? Zhang Yongde ordered to cut off the Huai River ten steps outside the floating bridge, and then tied a giant tree to prevent the enemy's attack.

On November 23, De "Iron Cables Connected Boats? A Good Way" said that "the enemy was familiar with water warfare, so there was no need to use iron cables to seek stability." De did not answer, and asked, "There are people in the army who know water nature" said that "there are three brothers of the Ruan family in the army, who know water nature" and De ordered "three people came over." Zhang Yongde gave face-to-face teaching of Ruan Laosan, Ruan Laosi, and Ruan Laoliu.

In the Tang camp, Zhao "what sound" was the sound of a wooden board. Could it be..." Zhao was shocked and asked someone with good water quality to go down and take a look. Zhou Bing came to chisel the boat?"

It was too late to find out. Dozens of small fire boats in front of him rushed over. Lin Renzhao urgently ordered the ship to drive the boat to meet the enemy. The ship could no longer move. They were not digging the boat, but just adding iron chains to the Tang ship. This time, Zhang Yongde did not encounter the wind direction of Lin Renzhao that time. The Tang soldiers were defeated and drowned a lot. Zhang Yongde received dozens of large ships and rewarded the Ruan brothers with gold belts.

Zhang Yongde, who got the big ship, surrounded Liu Renzhan's Shouzhou Water Village, and the last gap was blocked. A food crisis began to occur in Shouzhou City...

In the first month of the fourth year of Xiande (957), the King of Qi Li Jingda, who could not bear it, finally sent Xu Wenzhen, Bian Hao and Zhu Yuan to deliver food to Shouzhou City. The troops set up camp at the foot of Zijin Mountain and began to build a grain transport corridor that reached Shouzhou City for dozens of miles. I wonder what these people were thinking, but now Li Chongjin is outside Shouzhou City. Can this corridor fly over Li Chongjin's head? Another big defeat...

Liu Renshan is so angry! I wrote to Li Jingda: You transfer Bian Hao to defend the city. I will go out of the city to fight to the death with the enemy. How can this be done? This Shouzhou City is not your elder, who can defend it? Li Jingda immediately replied: No!

Now, Liu Renshan became ill. But this was not the biggest blow to him, and the next one was the blow to him.

Liu Renshan's youngest son Liu Chongjian stole everything, sneaked out of the city, and ran away. It would be fine if he could really escape. But he was caught by the patrolman and sent to Liu Renshan.

Liu Renshan said for a long time and finally said, "Son, I'll tell you a story. The son of a Mo family giant killed someone in Qin. King Hui of Qin thought that Juzi was old and was the only son in his knees, so he said, "I'm already given him." He paused and asked, "Do you know how the Giant answered?" Liu Chongjian shook his head. Liu Renshan continued, "Thank you, King Qin. But our Mo family regulations: Those who kill people die! Although you forgive your crimes, the Mo family regulations do not forgive him." Liu Chongjian heard the more he heard, the more wrong he was. He was trembling and hurriedly knelt down and shouted for his father to spare his orders. Liu Renshan ignored him and said word by word, "This is called killing his son and following the law."

General Zhang Quan made an appointment with the military supervisor Zhou Tinggou, but Liu Renzhan refused to listen. Zhou hurried to ask Mrs. Liu for help. Unexpectedly, the couple were both heartless, "I don't love my youngest son, but the military law is selfless and the reputation is not bad. The Liu family's loyalty and righteousness will not be sorry for the soldiers."

In the late lunar month of the 15th year of Baoda in the Southern Tang Dynasty (957), Liu Chongjian was beheaded in half. Liu Renshan killed his son and followed the law, but he himself could not stand the blow. He became increasingly ill and still refused to surrender. He fought his life to the end, and the soldiers were also inspired to defend the city to the death.

Li Chongjin outside Shouzhou City probably was desperate. Maybe he wanted to ask Liu Renzhan face to face: What benefits did Nan Tang give you? Let you be loyal and stubborn?

On February 8, 957, Li Gu, who was ill due to a labor-hard attack on Huainan, wanted to make up for his private withdrawal of troops that day, and submitted a memorial to request Chai Rong to personally expedition for the second time.

On February 16, Chai Rong ordered Wang Pu to stay in Tokyo, and Han Tong maintained the security of the capital. On the 17th, he led his army out of Daliang City, and at the same time ordered Wang Huan to lead thousands of naval troops he had just trained to go out to fight. On March 2nd, crossed the Huai River and came to the city of Shouzhou. On the 3rd, the army stationed at Zijin Mountain. Zhao Kuangyin attacked first and cut off the corridor built by the Tang soldiers. The Tang soldiers could not take care of each other at the end. At night, Chai Rong asked the generals to guard the camps and came to Xiacai by himself.

The strong enemy was approaching, and Chen Jue, one of the five ghosts, was still engaging in internal strife. Zhu Yuan, the general of the Southern Tang Dynasty who had recovered two states after Chai Rong returned to the north was his target. On the 4th, Zhu Yuan killed his general Shi Houqing and Zhu Renyu and others led more than 10,000 Tang soldiers to surrender. In the early morning of the 5th, the Tang camp, which had not come to surrender, was in trouble. He was captured by Chai Rong with a water and land coalition. Xu Wenzhen, Bian Hao, and Yang Shouzhong were captured.

A very interesting scene occurred in this battle: in the middle, the Zhou Dynasty navy set sail radically. The south bank, the future Emperor of Song, the north bank, and the Later Zhou Shizong each led a team of cavalry to chase and kill the defeated Tang soldiers. Who ran faster? Who annihilated more enemies? I don’t know. Maybe it was Zhao Kuangyin, after all, he was younger and stronger. Maybe it was Chai Rong, after all, he was more energetic. The two dragons advanced across the bank, rode horses and whipped their horses, pointed at the Huai River, and wielded their swords to compete with each other. It was so happy that the Tang soldiers suffered. They chased for more than 200 miles and chased them all the way to the Zhenhuai Army. The Tang soldiers had a 50,000 army, killed and captured more than 40,000. Li Jingda and Chen Jue were all spared and fled back to Jinling. Only Chen Decheng's troops retreated unscathed.

Two cities were built on the north and south sides of the Huai River, which was the capital of the Huai Army, and defeated Guo Tingwei's last reinforcements, the Southern Tang Dynasty could no longer draw decent reinforcements. The Tang Dynasty leader Li Jing even thought about learning from Chai Rong and helped himself. However, he was answered by his subordinate generals Zhu Kuangye and Liu Cunzhong with the poem "The world comes and the world is the same, and the heroes are not free." Although Li Jing exiled the two, he did not help himself after all. Everything depends on Liu Renzhan's own fortune in Shouzhou City.

On the 11th, Chai Rong ordered Xiang Xun to station in Zhenhuai Army. On the 12th, he came to the front line of Xiacai on the 13th, and personally issued an edict to Liu Renshan, urging him to choose good fortune and bad luck. On the 17th, Zhou Bing held a grand exercise under the city of Shouzhou, but he was so charming to see the blind man. The seriously ill Liu Renzhan almost didn't even recognize anyone.

The military supervisor Zhou Tinggou came to see him and informed the Zhou army to defeat Li Jingda's reinforcements. Liu Renshan gasped and coughed heavily. Zhou Tinggou said carefully, "It's better to surrender temporarily and discuss it with the long-term plan." Liu Renshan suddenly stood up and his eyes widened, "Surrender? Unless I'm dead." Zhou Tinggou hurriedly said, "I'm just thinking about the people in the city. Not for myself." Liu Renshan sighed without saying anything. Zhou Tinggou suddenly trembled and took out a piece from his arms, "This is a letter of help from the king of the country, please sign it after reading it." Liu Renshan had no strength anymore, and nodded and waved his hand. Zhou Tinggou understood, took the pen and ink, and wrote the three big words Liu Renshan.

On March 19, 957, the fourth year of Zhou Xiande (957), this "please help letter" was not in front of Li Jing, but was placed in front of Chai Rong. It was actually a surrender! Chai Rong was overjoyed and sent Zhang Baoxu into the city on the 20th to reply. On the 21st, the north gate of Shouzhou City opened! Chai Rong finally waited for this day for a whole year and five months. But did Chai Rong know that Liu Renshan was "surrendered"?

On March 24, Chai Rong issued an edict, conferring Liu Renzhan as the Minister of the Secretariat and the governor of Tianping. Liu Renzhan, who received this edict, was in a state of grief and anger, and vomited blood and died. On the same day on the 24th, Chai Rong issued a second edict to posthumously confer Liu Renzhan as the prince of Pengcheng, and Li Jing also conferred Liu Renzhan as the Grand Tutor. It was because Liu Renzhan was finally "surrendered", a ridiculous thing happened. Liu Renzhan, who had fought for the Southern Tang all his life and even killed his young son himself in Xueju.

The "Old History of the Five Dynasties" is recorded in the Biography of Zhou Chen. Is this an honor or a shame to Liu Renshan? Historical masters such as Ouyang Xiu and Sima Guang pursue the spirit of historians' straight-books and repeatedly verified it in the vast sea of historical materials, and finally confirmed Liu Renzhan's identity as a loyal minister. Ouyang Xiu praised Liu Renzhan with the highest honor in the "New History of the Five Dynasties". There are only three people in the "Biography of the Death Festival" which ranks first in the "Biography of the Death Festival": Wang Yanzhang, Pei Yue, and Liu Renzhan!

Shouzhou has been abandoned, and Huainan is no longer able to resist. It is a great time to pacify the 14 states. But Chai Rong started to drive north on March 29 and returned to Daliang on April 12. The second expedition to Huainan ended in just over a month.

Because a major incident occurred in Luoyang City, he had to rush back from the Huainan front line to deal with it. What a major incident? In fact, it is not a big incident, it is just a murder case for one person. Then, if you deal with it according to law, killing someone will pay for your life. It’s just that this person’s identity is special, and it cannot be handled by the emperor Chai Rong. Who is so awesome? Chai Shouli, the father of Chai Rong, was born!
