573 Do Unmanned Vehicles Need Lidar?

In other words, cars of this level cannot rely entirely on their autonomous driving, otherwise they will be just kidding their own lives.

Some companies have already achieved mass production of l3-level cars and have been launched on the market.

When it reaches the l4 level, companies around the world are testing. No company can do it, and no car models are launched on the market.

This is a higher level of autonomous driving. Drivers can not only release their feet and hands, but also their eyes do not need to look at the road surface.

Therefore, if you want to achieve unmanned driving, you must at least achieve the l4 level.

Now, the war dragon that Professor Zhong Guoqiang and his team are L4 Auto, and of course they are just tests, and there are still many problems.

If you really achieve l5, it will be completely autonomous driving. At present, l5 cars are just a legend.

No company in the world can do it. Not to mention mass production, there is not even a test car. It is just a beautiful fantasy and belongs to the black technology level.

Although l4 can also be driven by a driverless car, it can only be found in specific road sections, specific areas, and specific cities.

And the l5 car can handle it no matter how complicated it encounters, and it is safer than driving.

To implement l5 unmanned vehicles, the key lies in sensors and algorithms.

Zhong Guoqiang took a sip of ice spring: "The biggest problem at present is the sensor. Do you think our new generation of cars should be equipped with lidar?"

Many of the l3 unmanned vehicles sold on the market are not equipped with lidar, and some of them are finally removed after being installed.

Even Tesla's founder Boss Ma said that radar is useless and is not as reliable as a camera.

Zhong Guoqiang's R&D team encountered the same problem. Should we remove radars? Not only laser sensors, millimeter waves, ultrasonics, etc.?

Laser sensors can emit something called "laser beam", which can use it to sense surrounding obstacles, distance, movement speed, etc., to the millimeters accurately.

Sorry, lidar cannot recognize what it is, it only knows how far it is and how big it is.

If an unmanned vehicle is driving on the highway, because a large plastic bag flies over, the laser sensor will recognize it as an obstacle and issue an emergency brake command.

A large truck behind suddenly rushed up and directly hit the rear of the unmanned vehicle.

It was a plastic bag, but it caused a serious accident.

Not only lasers, other millimeter waves, ultrasonic waves, etc. can only detect but cannot be recognized.

However, the camera can identify what the object is. It is just a plastic bag, so it's OK to just drive it over without worrying about it.

Many autonomous vehicles do not carry laser sensors, and there is another reason, the cost, a laser sensor costs $10,000.

It consumes a lot of money for a sensor, which increases the cost of the car, and is not worth it.

Instead, the camera costs only $5, and it can also achieve the capabilities that laser sensors cannot do.

After careful consideration, Chen Yao said: "Although the laser sensor is not perfect, it is useful after all and needs to be installed. But the recognition of the camera will be given priority."

In other words, cameras are the main force of unmanned driving, and lidar and millimeter-wave radar are just auxiliary.

The camera is not perfect either. Behind it is an AI algorithm. Since it is an algorithm, there will be errors, especially the current artificial visual recognition, which cannot be completely as smart as humans.

It is still of great value to reduce the price of laser sensors.

Zhong Guoqiang asked: "How do you solve the cost problem?"

Since the debugging of the sensors on the market is not ideal, we can simply develop them yourself and develop more advanced radars.
