Chapter 39 How Shiba is made

In June 1913, Tianjin Army Medical School went to Sichuan to recruit students and admitted 6 candidates.

Guo Kaizhen (the original name of Guo Moruo), who studied in an official college in Sichuan Province, is one of them.

Why apply for this school?

At that time, he only felt that this was an opportunity to leave Sichuan, while his family felt that he had a reliable job.

In September of the same year, Guo Moruo and six candidates gathered in Chongqing and then took a boat to go east along the Yangtze River.

This is the first time Guo Moruo has left his hometown.

When the ship was sailing in the Three Gorges, Guo Moruo was passionately thinking about riding the wind and waves.

However, reality is cruel.

The Tianjin Army Medical School has a poor environment and low teaching quality. There is no foreign teacher or famous Chinese teacher, which disappoints Guo Moruo very much.

He had no interest in studying medicine, so he left Tianjin and came to Peking to find his elder brother Guo Kaiwen.

His reply to his classmates was "It is hard to hide if you are a little bit too far away."

However, his elder brother was not in a good condition and was unemployed, which made him feel overwhelmed.

Fortunately, I got a news that four schools in Japan accepted official fees for international students, and recruited twice in March and July each year.

For Guo Moruo, who has no direction in his life, this is a good way out.

In this way, on the evening of December 26, 1913, Guo Moruo left Peking and went to Japan.

In the years when he first arrived in Japan, Guo Moruo was depressed and depressed due to the ethnic discrimination he suffered during his wandering life in a foreign country, the dark social reality in the country, and the "extreme neurasthenia" he suffered from when he was studying in the preparatory course of the No. 1 High School in Tokyo.

He suddenly wanted to commit suicide, and suddenly he wanted to become a monk, and his spirit was on the verge of collapse.

In this case, he began to write poetry.

On March 30, 1920, the letter Guo Moruo wrote to Zong Baihua is very telling: "We studied in Japan, read Western books, and suffered Eastern sins."

"I was so unlucky when I was really caring! I have wanted to fly and escape to the West recently. Unfortunately, I have no money and I am not free, alas!"

Zong Baihua was the editor-in-chief of the supplement "Xuelange" at that time, and Guo Moruo was a newcomer to the literary world.

Guo Moruo's new poems began in the second half of 1919. Because he was a newcomer and his poems were not well written, his poems were often rejected by domestic publications.

He was already pretentious and could not help but be angry because of this.

Later, it was appreciated by Zong Baihua that a relatively fixed publishing site was found.

When Zong Baihua left "Learning Lamp", the editor-in-chief of "Learning Lamp" was replaced by Li Shicen. Li Shicen and Guo Moruo have no special relationship, so naturally they will not treat his works very specially.

"Jun Li always treats me coldly." Guo Moruo said.

The Li Jun here is Li Shicen.

Starting from April 1921, Guo Moruo took a break from Kyushu Imperial University in Japan for half a year, traveling between Japan and Shanghai, and contacted Shanghai Taidong Library for printing literary journals.

For various reasons, the two sides agreed to publish the series first.

The works published by Guo Moruo, Yu Dafu and others in "The Lamp" and the works that have not been published were compiled into the poetry collection "Goddess" and the novel collection "Sinking" and the "Creation Society Series" and published by Jiaotai East Book Company.

The first type of "Creation Society Series" is "Goddess".

This is the first shot of the Creation Society, and it must be fired. Guo Moruo is very confident in his collection of poems.

As it turns out, this is indeed the case.

"The Goddess" was born out of nowhere and was warmly welcomed by young people. Some seniors in the poetry world also praised it, which made Guo Moruo's confidence soar.

However, he found that among many comments, he was always compared with a poet named Lin Zixuan.

Some people even think that Lin Zixuan is the founder of the new poetry.

He spent most of his time in Japan and did not know much about the current situation in the domestic literary world, and Lin Zixuan had just become famous.

Guo Moruo looked at Lin Zixuan's poems and looked at them, and was very dissatisfied.

Lin Zixuan has only published sixteen new poems so far, mostly love poems and philosophical poems. The reason why he has received such praise is probably because Lu Xun and Zhou Zuoren are behind the scenes.

This made him even more annoyed. He was no longer a newcomer to the literary world, but he was not as good as the Zhou brothers in the literary world.

Guo Moruo naturally didn't want to swallow his anger and was at a disadvantage in this contest of new poetry.

This was the first battle of Creation Society.

In the field of new poetry, three people are currently mentioned repeatedly, Hu Shi, Lin Zixuan and Guo Moruo.

Hu Shi has a relatively old experience in the literary world and is difficult to deal with. "Test Collection" has indeed set a precedent for new poetry, and this is unmatched.

But Lin Zixuan is just a newcomer who has just emerged. He has only become famous after reaching the Zhou brothers. In terms of qualifications, he is not as good as Guo Moruo.

Therefore, in order to teach newcomers a lesson, Guo Moruo published "Some Views on New Poetry" in "Learning the Lamp".

That is the article Lin Zixuan saw. The article guided and persuaded Lin Zixuan as a senior in the poetry world, so that Lin Zixuan would not go the wrong way.

Two days later, Lin Zixuan's counterattack came.

Not only did he publish four new poems in "Learning Lamp", he also wrote comments to persuade Guo Moru to take charge of himself and not be a "poetry tyrant".

Guo Moruo was very angry.

He read four poems written by Lin Zixuan, "The Dead Water" and "Looking for Li Bai" were written entirely in response to his criticism.

"Dangerous Water" looks like a pool of stagnant water, but it implies a shocking roar. The majestic atmosphere of "Looking for Li Bai" is even more touching. What is even more rare is that Lin Zixuan's poems pay more attention to beauty.

As for "Song of Macau" and "Some People" are also considered excellent works, they are not that important.

Lin Zixuan's counterattack has poured oil on the debate on New Poetry, and it is becoming increasingly fierce. Some cultural celebrities have stood up.

Luxun and Zhou Zuoren published articles to support Lin Zixuan.

Lu Xun attaches great importance to "The Dead Water". He likes the power behind the Dead Water, while Zhou Zuoren prefers "Looking for Li Bai". From this we can see that the two brothers have different literary pursuits.

Hu Shi, who has been busy "tidying up the country's past", also published articles supporting Lin Zixuan.

It is very correct to think that Lin Zixuan’s view that new poetry should bloom with flowers. He can try all kinds of styles of writing new poetry, and there must be no limitations or obey someone’s instructions.

A large part of the reason why Hu Shi spoke up for Lin Zixuan is that he also graduated from Columbia University.

In 1915, he studied philosophy at Columbia University and was an alumni of Lin Zixuan.

In the literary world during the Republic of China period, there was a very interesting phenomenon, which was roughly divided into literati who returned from studying in Europe and the United States and literati who returned from studying in Japan.

Many of them are alumni, which are divided into many small groups.

For example, Lin Zixuan and Hu Shi both graduated from Columbia University, so they will feel close. Generally, they will not offend each other, and will also help each other within their ability.
