Chapter Eighteen "Thunderstorm"

The art form of drama is an imported drama, with dialogue and movement as the main means of expression.

European countries are commonly known as drama, and Chinese drama was first called new drama or civilized drama.

In the winter of 1906, inspired by the Japanese "new-style" drama, Chinese students studying in Japan, Zeng Xiaogu, Li Shutong and others organized a comprehensive art group Chunliu Society in Tokyo.

In the same year, Wang Zhongsheng and others organized the "Chunyang Society" in Shanghai to perform "Black Slave Sounding Heavenly Lu".

This marks the foundation and beginning of Chinese drama.

From 1907 to 1917, a group of new drama groups such as literary and artistic theaters, evolution troupes, Nankai New Theater, New Drama Association, etc., performed plays such as "Hot Blood", "Long Live the Republic", and "Social Bell" and were warmly welcomed by the people.

However, after the Xinhai Revolution, the civilized drama gradually became silent.

This is caused by many reasons.

First of all, there is the issue of performance form. In the fierce collision of Chinese and Western cultures, the form of civilized play has become a transitional form of "either Chinese or Western, neither Chinese or Western, neither new nor old, new or old, and mixed with mixed and mixed forms."

Failure to find your position is thus losing the foundation of survival.

Secondly, some businessmen saw that it was profitable to perform civilized dramas, so they rushed forward. For a time, new dramas emerged, and so-called new dramas were released.

It seems that the number of new drama practitioners has increased, and the team has been strengthened on the surface, but in fact, it has mixed skills and reduced its quality.

The drama club only cares about making money and is vulgar in its incest, which has caused the quality of civilized drama art that has not gained a foothold, and eventually it lost its audience.

Finally, the cultural drama is insufficient and the thoughts are poor.

Many drama clubs do not have a complete script before performing, but only let the actors perform on stage according to the general plot, or even interfere in a muddy and funny way, and the quality cannot be guaranteed at all.

After the May Fourth Movement, love American dramas came to the stage of history.

The so-called love for American dramas is not an American drama in later generations, but a non-professional drama that does not aim to make a profit. The People's Drama Society, Xinyou Drama Society, Nanguo Society and other drama groups have been established one after another.

Love American dramas and pay attention to social issues and advocate Ibsen's dramas, such as "Doll House".

This kind of drama is deeply loved by young people. In this era, they are fashion. They create scripts and perform them themselves, without considering making money, but just want to express their own opinions.

Thanks to the recommendations of Hu Shi, Chen Duxiu and others, it has caused a trend among young students.

Most schools organize drama clubs, and young people have extremely passionate. They don’t need a big stage at all. They can perform in classrooms or on the streets.

Of course, the scripts created in this way are of varying quality, and many scripts only want to shout slogans, which lack profound connotations.

This is the time when Chinese drama is in full swing.

One day in May 1921, the manuscript of "Thunderstorm" appeared in a girls' school in Peking.

Feng Chengcheng sat upright in the classroom, looking through "Thunderstorm".

She hadn't realized that she was watching a great drama. She was just attracted by the plot in the drama and didn't hear what the teacher on the podium was talking about.

"Thunderstorm" has four scenes, focusing on two scenes. The plot in the play develops less than twenty-four hours, but it shows the grudges and hatreds of the Zhou and Lu families for 30 years.

As the plot unfolds, Feng Chengcheng feels more and more depressed.

Zhou Puyuan's autocracy, cruelty and hypocrisy; Zhou Chong's enthusiasm and simplicity; Fan Yi's deep love and even a slightly perverted persistence; Zhou Ping, who regrets his sins but commits greater sins without knowingly; Lu Ma, who is insulted and teased, is sad...

There are also family secrets, life experiences, and all of this erupted on a thunderstorm night.

The wrong, guilty, innocent people actually went to destruction together.

"Thunderstorm" shows a great tragedy in life, a cruel teasing of fate on people in an unequal society.

The author vents suppressed resentment and slanders China's family and society in an extremely thunderstorm-like way.

At this time, Feng Chengcheng could not fully understand the connotation that "Thunderstorm" was to be expressed, but he just felt that the story could be so miserable and so depressing.

She felt breathless and wanted to breathe outside the classroom.

This is completely different from the dramas she has been in contact with in the past.

As a literary activist, she also rehearsed dramas in school, such as a arranged marriage that resisted the family, fought for independence and freedom, or famous dramas from Europe.

For the first time, she felt that the dramas she had rehearsed before were so superficial and the plot was so ridiculous.

She didn't expect that she just mentioned it casually, and Lin Zixuan actually gave her such a script. This is not something that students in middle school can perform, only regular theater troupes can do.

Feng Chengcheng slowly calmed down and continued to look through Lin Zixuan's letters.

Behind it is Lin Zixuan's advice. He has no objection to publishing poems and can use the real name, but if "Thunderstorm" is published, it cannot use the real name.

He himself comes from a big family, and so is the story of "Thunderstorm".

If someone knows that "Thunderstorm" was written by the young master of the Lin family, it will inevitably cause associations or even insinuations.

The Lin family is his foundation. He doesn't want to cause trouble and is expelled from the family. After all, he is not the same as the young people of this era.

Because of this, Feng Chengcheng felt that Lin Zixuan lacked courage.

She was in Peiping, the center of the May Fourth Movement, and felt the fanaticism of the young people here. She was infected by some passionate slogans all day long, as if she would not break with the feudal family, she would not be a new youth.

She also fantasized about having a career after graduation and being able to be independent.

You must never live for your husband like Nora in "Doll House" and become a doll of life. In the end, you are abandoned by your husband, and then you will repent and run away from home.

But this is a future matter. What she has to consider now is how to deal with "Thunderstorm".

Feng Chengcheng decided to hand over the poems and "Thunderstorm" to Mr. Zhou Zuoren and publish them in the newspaper so that more people can see them.

Two days later, she met Zhou Zuoren at Peking University.

She selected sixteen poems from the poems, which rarely involve love, and she did not want to publish those slightly outrageous poems in the newspaper.

In fact, from the perspective of future generations, it is not out of line, but it is difficult to accept in this era.

Zhou Zuoren looked through the poem and felt deeply moved.

He is also a talented person and thinks he is no worse than others, but he is not as good as Lin Zixuan in poetry.

I heard that Lin Zixuan was a foreign student who returned from the United States, so he nodded secretly. Only those who have been exposed to European and American literature can write such beautiful new poems. Many poems obviously borrow the writing style of foreign poetry.

Next, he saw "Thunderstorm".

For half an hour, Zhou Zuoren has been immersed in the story of "Thunderstorm".

He was very excited inside. Unlike Feng Chengcheng, he saw the value of "Thunderstorm".

He has always advocated literature as life, paid attention to realistic writing, and believed that literature that expresses social life is true literature, and should pay attention to observing and describing the darkness of society, the pain of people's lives, and the conflicts in the ideological between the old and new generations.
