Chapter 481: Brothers Reunite (3)
That's right, it's that god show.
The monk Shenxiu, who made the story of "the body is a Bodhi tree, the heart is like a mirror platform, and wipe it frequently and do not cause dust to spread," and competed with the Sixth Patriarch Huineng for the fifth Patriarch Hongren robe.
Monk Shenxiu, whose original surname is Li, is from Bianzhou.
When he was a young man, he read a lot of books. At the end of the Sui Dynasty, he became a monk and later became a teacher of Hongren.
However, according to Yang Shouwen's understanding, Shen Xiu was 94 years old at this time, and there was no legend among the people about his persecution and chasing the Sixth Patriarch Huineng. According to the "Zhongyue Swordsman Shufaru Zen Master", Shen Xiu was a descendant of Hongren's orthodox orthodox. The story of Hongren's Dharma Vestments recorded in the six-group Platform Sutra in later generations is likely a lie made up by Huineng's Land Shenhui monk to compete with the Northern Zen Sect for royal offerings.
The battle between the north and the south of Zen Buddhism was eventually won by the Southern School, so Huineng achieved the status of the Sixth Patriarch, while Shen Xiu became a villain.
There are two paths of practice in the Buddhist Tripitaka and Twelve Divisions of Mahayana and Hinayana Sutras, one is sudden enlightenment, and the other is gradual cultivation.
How difficult is the epiphany?
The Sixth Patriarch Huineng is the representative of it. He once said: This method of my guide is to guide people of the highest level.
This is like the spiritual roots in later generations of immortal cultivation novels, and the spiritual roots of heaven are of high qualifications.
However, even the spiritual roots of enlightenment may not be able to achieve success. Only those who are more awesome than the spiritual roots of heaven can practice.
Therefore, this kind of practice is only suitable for a very small number of people.
What Mr. Shenxiu represents is the method of gradual cultivation, which originated from the Four Patriarchs’ Daoxin and completed by the Fifth Patriarch’s Hongren, commonly known as ‘Talkshu Zen’. The fundamental reason for his practice is to promote Zen methods that do not establish words through Buddhist scriptures, so that all those who are interested in seeking Buddha can embark on the path of practice. No matter whether you are interested in seeking Buddha’s nature, as long as you are interested in seeking Buddha.
Historically, this is the "gradual practice" method representing the Northern Zen study.
Therefore, from the perspective of Buddhism, the true descendant of the Dongshan Dharma of Zen Buddhism was Shenxiu, not Huineng.
Huineng's practice method actually belongs to the Buddha's direct teaching of "sealing the heart with the heart, not establishing words". It has deviated from the sutras of Tathagata and restored the true nature of Zen. It is difficult to explain which one is higher and which one is lower. If we talk about it from the perspective of saving suffering, gradual practice is more suitable for the general public. However, the sudden enlightenment of the sect represented by Huineng later achieved victory, which ultimately made Zen Buddhism increasingly restricted to a few people, and most people could not touch it.

When Yang Shouwen first heard that when he asked him to worship Monk Shenxiu as his teacher, he was a little reluctant.
The reason is that later generations of demonization of Monk Shenxiu was really amazing... However, after Master Xuanshuo's explanation, he believed that Monk Shenxiu's method was better than Nalaoshizi's enlightenment method. He was not a person with "Buddha nature", so as the gradual practice method represented by Monk Shenxiu seemed to be more suitable for him.
Monk Shenxiu is still compiling the "Manjushri Prajna Sutra" in Baoen Temple, so he is unable to come to Shendu for the time being.
However, he was obviously very interested in Yang Shouwen. After learning that Xuanshuo recommended him as Yang Shouwen's master, he immediately ordered his disciples, who are now sent a certificate of tribute to the abbot of Master Puji in Shaolin Temple in Songshan, and the "Lankavatara Sutra" translated and compiled by Monk Shenxiu himself. Monk Shenxiu also preached the oral message: the root of the Dongshan Dharma is all in the two sutras of the "Lankavatara Sutra" and the "Manjushri Prajna Sutra". Among them, the Manjushri Prajna Sutra is being revised, while the Lankavatara Sutra is revised by the Fourth Patriarch Daoxin and the Fifth Patriarch Hongren. It is completely complete and is the fundamental sutra of the Dongshan Dharma.
Since Yang Shouwen wanted to worship Shenxiu as his teacher, he had to read the Lankavatara Sutra carefully.
After Shenxiu has finished revising the Manjushri Prajna Sutra, he will come to the capital of Shenluo and teach Yang Shouwen the Dharma.
During this period, Master Huineng's sudden enlightenment of the sect was not the mainstream of this era.
Even though Master Huineng was known as the Sixth Patriarch in later generations, he was not recognized during the Wu Zetian period and even during the Xuanzong period.
In the eyes of ordinary people, Huineng is just an illiterate southern gangster. He has only been to Dongshan for a few years and does a kitchen job. Although he snatched the Buddha's robe and bowl, it is not considered authentic. However, Master Shenxiu is different. He is proficient in Confucianism and Taoism and has learned a lot of the metaphysics of Laozi and Zhuangzi. Master Hongren sighed before his lifetime: The methods of Dongshan are all in Xiu. This Xiu is Shenxiu.
Yang Shouwen felt very stressed...
In the past two days, he would recite two pages of scripture every day.
But maybe he really doesn't have Buddha, and he will feel drowsy every time he can't read a few sentences.
However, he respected Shenxiu very much in his heart. Therefore, he also despised Mingxiu for making excuses and slaughtering teeth throughout his day.
Mingxiu didn't care at all and sneered: "It seems that you have eaten less every time you say."
"Bah, I am a monk who is drinking and meat passing through the intestines, and the Buddha sits in his heart.
Also, don’t call me the word “大” in the future… I am a monk now, and Master Shenxiu gave me the Dharma name and the call to the call…
Bah, Bah, Master Shenxiu gave me this Dharma name so ugly, it was really unpleasant to be killed."
Mingxiu didn't understand Yang Shouwen's time traveler mentality at all.
He curled his lips and said, "The name of Zuoji is very good. I really don't understand why you are so dissatisfied."
Damn, the following words were left in the history books: Yang Shouwen, who was from Changping, Youzhou, was born in the second year of Shengli. He was called on the Dharma?
Those later generations with rich associations don’t know what kind of jokes to make.
But Yang Shouwen couldn't tell Mingxiu too clearly, so he just snorted and didn't continue to debate with him...
"By the way, when I came back just now, I met someone from Taiwei Palace.
Taoist Master Yiqing was punished to recite the Tao Te Ching today, so he could not go out. I heard from the Taoist priest in the palace that Master Huan Daoyan was almost crazy by Yiqing's anger. A Taoist Ching, which only has five thousand words, has not been able to recite it after memorizing it for three months."
Yiqing is Li Guer's Taoist name, also known as Xuanji Taoist.
After hearing this, Yang Shouwen burst into laughter.
Li Guer is the kind of rabbit-lossing. You let her laugh and laugh, it doesn’t matter if you want her to do a knife and a gun, but it’s really hard for her to recite the book. Thinking about it, I’m just like that, after three months of entering the Tao, I couldn’t even recite a sutra. As Li Guer’s master, I was really blind. At this moment, Guer’s life will be sad, and I guess it will take several days to be honest.

On the side, Gao Lishi had already cleaned up the two rabbits.
He lit a bonfire in the open space in front of the cottage, skillfully put the rabbit in hand, and home on the bonfire.
The treated internal organs were thrown to the rare four brothers.
Mingxiu picked up a jar of Lumenchun from the thatched cottage and sat down by the bonfire, looking leisurely and contented.
"Although you say that becoming a monk is full of suffering, you are still quite free."
Yang Shouwen also walked forward and said sarcastically: "You are a charlatan, but you have become a wine monk.
I don’t know what the old people in your family think... If it were me, I would have caught you back and beat you up."
"You know nothing!"
Mingxiu swears, then takes a vicious sip of wine.
"The old man now has the position of deputy envoy of Quanzhou Maritime Mansion. Will he care whether I am a Taoist priest or a monk?
But if my aunt knew about it, she would probably have to beat her up.
Qingzhi... No, Master Zhaoji, I became a monk this time because of you. You will have to plead for me at that time."
Yang Shouwen said suddenly: "I'll plead for you? That's useful."
“It must be fine.
With your big toad aura, I believe my aunt will show mercy."
"By the way, you haven't told me yet, what's going on with this big toad energy?"
"Oh, don't worry, you will understand it naturally then."
Yang Shouwen looked at Mingxiu, but saw that he looked calm and he couldn't ask any further questions.
At this time, the rabbit's baked skin was browned and oily.
A strong smell of meat spread in the valley, and the big jade that originally lived on the branches also flew down and stood on Yang Shouwen's shoulder.
"Xiao Gao, your skill in barbecue is getting better and better. When you return to the palace in the future, you will definitely not have to worry about errands."
When Gao Lishi heard this, he immediately grinned.
In this valley, Yang Shouwen was better, but Mingxiu was a gourmet.
In addition, Li Guer, who was already used to being rich and well-behaved, had a headache for him for a long time after his daily diet.
But it's good, it's good to practice cooking skills.
Gao Lishi was about to laugh, but suddenly heard the rare four brothers barking.
They barked at the mouth of the valley, showing a look of vigilance. The big jade rushed into the sky and circled over the valley.
Immediately afterwards, a sound of horse hooves came.
Someone shouted loudly outside the valley: "Is this Taohuayu? Is the second brother here? I am Gai Jiayun..." (To be continued.)
